07 - Vitamin C (fades) 6:33

TT = 1:25:58

This is a totally manic, hot, and high-strung concert board rec of the group in an experimental phase. Ratnam sounds a screw or two loose, especially in "Bel Air" when he begins screaming "DESTRUCTION... DEEESTRUUCTIOOOOOOOON!!"
"Vitamin C" sadly fades before it really revs up into "fully operational Can" gear. Nonetheless, this concert is a favorite of mine, and I hope everyone will like this revision as much as I do.

* Tape flip at about 47 mins cross faded, but it's pretty rough.

This show was performed in a lecture hall or small theater at the C.W. Post Campus, because "The Dome" had recently collapsed in a snowstorm.  It was not held in the Tilles Center (which probably didn't exist then).

Shades of Spinal Tap:  According to Peter Hedeman, the band arrived late due to snow, and ran into the building, following the microphone snake.  They followed it the wrong way and burst into the area where the WLIR truck was located.  "It was pretty funny, the shocked look on their faces."  At the end of track 4, EC apologizes for being late, and explains that the door fell off their bus, so they arrived by car and had no time to do a soundcheck.  That's probably why the first track on the master cassette was slightly cut off.  The encore is dedicated to their driver, the "Miracle Man."

04 - Snow Angel
05 - Skyline Drifter

CD2
01 - The Web
02 - Herne the Hunter
03 - Garden Party

Remastering Details:
I applied just a light amount of hiss reduction, as the hiss was fairly distracting.

I suspect this was recorded from vinyl. You could hear the stylus set down on the record at 41:51 mark, before I cut the gap out, anyway.

There were Fairly frequent clicks and pops in the left channel (one or 2 a minute), some quite loud. I removed all those I heard. It semms fine now.

Fish seems to be amused at the first section of Grendel, as he can be heard chuckling during a few parts, at least to my ear.

Snow Angel seems a precursor of Forgotten Sons. The last half of song sounds very similar to parts of Forgotten Sons.

March 3, 1981 is the generally accepted date for this recording. According to the bit taken from "The Web" cited below, if they practiced for 10 weeks prior to performing their first gig on March 14, 1981, then it would stand to reason that this is not actually Fish's first practice session, which is how this recording is commonly traded.

“The Web” - Issue 1 - February 1982:
Diz Minnit (Bass) and Fish (Vocals) answered an ad in “Musicians Only” and moved down to Aylesbury on the 2nd January, 1981. The new line up rehearsed at the Leyland Farm Studios in Bucks for 10 weeks and played their first set at the “Red Lion”, Bicester on the 14th March. 65 people turned up!

This recording came out in mid 2014. Previously there was only a very bad sounding recording of this show so this was a major upgrade. This is the only recording from the 1988-89 tour where he sings Smooth Criminal, Bad and The Way You Make Me Feel completely live without lip sync. The show is all live vocals except for the first 4 minutes of the last song.

Deep Purple - 1997-03-03 - Buenos Aires, ARG (SBD/FLAC)

(Soundboard FLAC)

In feb-1997, Deep Purple began its first proper south-american tour ever. First stop was an open air show in Santiago, Chile. It was a disaster, as the centerfield lightning tower collapsed (check youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZ-do4e4Ryg). Three nights in Buenos Aires, Argentina followed. The band was a bit nervous, and the audience (a mix of young and older rockers who have been expecting to see them for over 25 years) was over excited. Anyway, by the time of the third concert everyone was relaxed and this tape shows great playing and good mood.

Several years later, a cdr with this soundboard gig started going the rounds through collectors. It sounded great, but it had some problems: no continuous playing, volume fluctuations, digital glitches... I worked hard to improve it in order to share it with you.

It was obviously sourced from a well-played cassette, seems like most of Gillan banter between tracks is missed, but as Ian says near the end of the show "I haven't spoke so much over the last three days", so probably there's not a big loss anyway.

Cover art lists "When A Blind Man Cries" as track one on CD2, but on this version is the last track on CD1.

Deep Purple MarkVII is: Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Steve Morse

Notes by the taper/trader:
An doubts that VH can still put on a great show are certainly being put to rest on this tour. The boys can still blow the roof off with superb musicianship and showmanship. I've always been a purest so my preference for front man has always been Dave. I've seen the SH version and although they had their moments, the original is always the best. The new album is reminiscent of the early years in my opinion, I especially like the Hendrix 'Crosstown Traffic' tinged 'The Trouble With Never'. Another very nice recording with little to no audience distractions. Some subtle EQ work to smooth out and balance the recording.

Notes by the taper:
You have all probably read the reviews of this show, Well all I can say is this wasn't a great Van show, This was an Awesome,Jaw-Dropping Show. A Saturday evening Brighton Crowd had come to party with Van and he seemed to relish it. Give it a spin, Play it loud, and I hope I managed to capture a reasonable record of a stunning evening.

Nothing has been done to the File except trimming the rubbish at the beginning and end and a fade in and out added, and of course splitting the tracks, no volume adjustments have been made so you may find it quiet, but thats what the big dial on your Hi-Fi marked volume is for. Do what you want with it now, after all I nicked it off Van, If you master it and improve it please repost as id love to hear it.

The final night of LU's mini LA World Tour turned out to be a special one. LU remarked early on that this venue was her favorite in Los Angeles and how glad she was to finally be playing in it. There are a couple songs that were special; Copenhagen, Ugly Truth and a tribute to Lou Reed, Pale Blue Eyes. Enthusiastic but respectful crowd, no distractions, yackers, whistlers. Fantastic sound system and great mix, crank it up!!
