Also included as a BONUS for your pleasure
"1991 - Now Dig This " interview in a text file [ with Van, mentioned in comments below] I highly suggest to read the interview while listening to this AWESOME package of music. ENJOY

Source Notes
This may be the CLEANEST copy (i think it is) out there if it is even circulating and/or on any tracker and possibly cleaner than the original. i used audacity to clean up any pops and/or clicks that were present. I also deleted some dead noise at the end of some tracks (so some tracks are shorter than the original track times. if you own this you would know some tracks fade at the end and stop suddenly) Don't worry no music is missing. Also on Disc 3 Tracks 10 & 14 i used cdwave and split the songs into there own tracks. A lot of hard work went in to this project to bring forth the best sounding source for the members here and for myself as i enjoy listening to this when my health on certain days gets the best of me.

COMMENTS
Note that the cover image - obviously doctored - shows Van holding the The Genuine Philosopher's Stone boot... Described in ICE as follows: "Wild Card deals its way into every nook and cranny of the last 35 years of Vandom to compile Catalog Strays. The three-CD anthology - boasting 51 tracks in all - covers every Morrison non-album track, B-Side, alternate mix, duet, withdrawn song, soundtracks and/or rarity hidden somewhere between 1965-2000." The package includes 51 track and a 52 page brochure with a biography and the interview called "Roots and Influences" with Paul Lewis from Now Dig This magazine, in November 1991. Some of the tracks from this collection come from the various Guest Appearances that Van has done on other artists' CDs over the years. Others are from some of Van's CD singles

Geetarz Comments:
The early 1990s were an amazing run for Clapton, with the growth of the Royal Albert Hall shows, constant touring, and seemingly inexhaustible exposure. Starting in 1990, "blues only" nights were a part of the Albert runs, and hugely popular with diehard fans. But EC's management and label resisted the idea of progressing any further in that direction. After the huge critical and commercial success of "Unplugged", Clapton was freed to pursue other directions, which eventually led to the "blues tours" in 1994 and 1995. The Summer and Fall 1993 shows were a fascinating melange of classic rock, pop, and hard blues. If you're one of those people who listens to "good music" no matter what the genre, the 1993 shows are probably the most accessible EC ever did live. In the fall of 1993, EC went to Japan, where the audiences are deeply respectful and appreciative - the perfect crowd for this fusion of old and new. The sets began quietly, with acoustic blues, veering from the Delta sounds to the sounds of electric Chicago blues, and then coming to the fire and fury of 1960s British Blues, with "White Room" and "Badge". After a breather of "Wonderful Tonight" (a perennial Clapton Speed Bump in most sets) there comes EC's unhinged rendition of Hendrix' "Stone Free". After a more modern pop / AOR break with "Circus" and "Tears in Heaven", the band breaks into a funky reworking of "Crossroads", the 1980s hit pop single "Tearing Us Apart", then digging deep into the blues with "Groaning the Blues". As if this set didn't cover enough musical decades, next we have EC's 1970s version of "Cocaine", with a new feel for the 1990s, Bessie Smith's 1920s "Ain't Nobody's Business", and then closing with those Seven Incredible Notes, "Layla" ... themselves taken from Albert King's "As the Years Go Passing By". Basically, this set is like a Graduate Level course in the history of the blues, taught by one of its best students. Recorded over several nights at Tokyo's Budokan Theater, this is an interesting release, as this is not a pure soundboard recording! Obviously mixed for broadcast / release, from several different nights, and the mix itself is what one could call a "radio" mix, in that crowd mics are used to add ambience as is usually done on broadcasts. One can only speculate that this was destined for release at some point, and plans were shelved. Luckily, Mid Valley to the rescue - an essential part of any Clapton collection, the eclectic mix of traditional blues, classic rock, and pop hits is a winner.

The Pink Floyd Story: Which One's Pink? (BBC1) takes that Live8 gig in Hyde Park as a starting point, then goes back, way back, to a time when they had hair, heaps of it, and a frontman who had a special kind of star quality and charisma. There was no room for any of that in the Floyd though, and Syd Barrett fell by the wayside, an acid casualty, lost to a permanent lapse of reason. The others were left to twiddle and bang away and experiment until they stumbled upon their phenomenally successful sound.

This is a terrific documentary, chiefly for one reason: it is the Pink Floyd story told by, guess who ... Pink Floyd! Bob Geldof also comes on to deliver his shouty opinion, but mainly it comes from the horses' mouths (Roger Waters actually looks more and more like a horse as he gets on). Not together, of course, that would have been too much to ask for - a huge outdoor stage in London is one thing, a room is quite different. But they address their differences, and their guilt and grief over Barrett. They are honest and thoughtful, a bit shy (except for Waters who clearly has an ego as long as his face). Sure, there is a smugness there, as there is in their music. It's certainly not hard to empathise with Johnny Rotten and his famous "I hate Pink Floyd" T-shirt. But to wear one, in honesty, would be hard.

This version is not listed on bassman. However his description of another release of this is identical to the version I share.

Notes: From http://www.algonet.se/~bassman/ :
A very nice compilation in mostly excellent sound quality. The only tracks that are a bit less than excellent are the 1972 songs.
The alternative take of OH! YOU PRETTY THINGS is not too good when it comes to the sound quality. The two first versions of QUEEN BITCH are aborted versions due to mistakes.
The same goes for the first versions of ZIGGY STARDUST and ALL THE YOUNG DUDES from BBC 2000. THE JEAN GENIE from the same session is without Bowie, just the band fooling around with the song!

Another superb collection of undubbed and unedited masters from Venus Productions. The fourth in the series and the best to date. Highlights include the first track Burning Love takes 5-6 and the 1980 re-makes of For Ol' Times' Sake and Bitter They Are. Listen out as well for the infamous barking dog at the end of Way Down. In fact every track on this one is a winner.

Pony Express Records released four different versions of a bootleg called "Before The Fame" in the late 1990's. The first edition is the rarest (I'm still hunting down a copy) and this version, the fourth, is the most common. Each addition evolved with more songs, with the original release (1 CD) duplicating songs on other bootlegs, the second release (1 CD) having the same songs except three of them which are replaced by different tracks, the third release (1 CD) is the exact same release as version two but with different packaging and artwork, and the fourth and final version (2 CD) featured the most tracks with seven more than the previous release evolving to a two CD set.

The tracks themselves are unreleased studio outtakes from 1972 and 1973, referred to as 'Laurel Canyon Music Publishing Demos'. Some recordings were distributed on tape, others on acetates, to mostly England. They were recorded at various locations noted below. Most of these songs were first released into mainstream circulation on this bootleg, in excellent quality because most ofthe tracks were transferred from the original master tapes or at least very low generation copies of them. This early material of Bruce's is a fanscinating glimpse into his early writing with songs that play out in front of you like a story - so visual. The songs recorded at Jim Cretecos' apartment and Mediasound Studios were recorded and produced by Cretecos, with Mike Appel also producing (Cretecos was a producer and engineer that recorded most of Bruce's early material). The others recorded at 914 Sound Studios were recorded and engineered by Pete Weiss during the 1972 sessios and by Louis Lahav in the 1973 sessions (I honestly like his mixes the most out of all of the engineers Bruce has gone through).

As the inner insert of the bootleg says, "This rare release invites you to listen to Bruce Springsteen "before the fame, but not before the genius."

The Band outtakes, Bearsville Studios, 1969:

4. Get Up Jake
5. Baby, Don't You Do It

Woodstock, August 19, 1969:

(Woodstock was 17th of August 1969, not 19th as the bootleg says. Also of note is that the source tape changes to a different one at 00:01:41 in middle of "Don't Ya Tell Henry.")

This 3 CD The Band bootleg was released in 1997 and should not be confused with the official Across the Great Divide box set. This is the third release in The Genuine Bootleg Series, for some reason sub-titled Take 4. The two first bootleg boxes, The Genuine Bootleg Series, and The Genuine Bootleg Series, Take 2, were mainly filled with Dylan material. Take 4 only has a small amount of Dylan content that is available elsewhere. A Take 3 CD set, all Dylan content, was released in 1999.

As usual for the Genuine Bootleg Series, this one continues the same tradition of high production values with multiple gatefold glossy-color sleeves. It also sports inner disc sleeves (each w/color pics + tracklist) and a 36-page booklet containing full text of the July '91 Goldmine article along with more photos and the track listings. All of the Genuine Bootleg Series have been reissued a few times, in cardboard sleeves and jewel boxes, and The Genuine Bootleg Series Vol 4 seem to exist also under the title Statue of Liberty.

58 tracks in all, including early Hawks material, outtakes from 1965 - 1967 The Basement Tapes and Big Pink sessions, outtakes from The Band, Rock of Ages, and Planet Waves, various Band live recordings, bits of a 1988 Levon Helm concert, and three demos for Jericho. A nice set with good sound quality.
