Bruce Springsteen - The Ties That Bind (STU/FLAC)

(Studio FLAC)

Unreleased 1979 Studio Album

Audio type: 16 bit/44.1 kHz (CD Audio)

01. The Ties That Bind
02. Cindy
03. Hungry Heart
04. Stolen Car
05. To Be True
06. The River
07. You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)
08. The Price You Pay
09. I Wanna Marry You
10. Loose Ends

Notes:
Unlike most upgrades, this 2011 edition of The Ties That Bind utilizes the same source tapes: a pair of 15 IPS, half-track reels that turned up at a Pasadena swap meet in the early '90s. The initial transfer of those reels--from which, to be clear, ALL known copies and releases emanate--was done on a rented open-reel tape deck to DAT at 16 bit/48 kHz. There was no playback azimuth correction. No demagnetization of the heads (at least they were cleaned between tape sides). No correcting for balanced/unbalanced connections. In short, it was the best transfer that could be made given the time and circumstances (c'mon, we were kids then) and it sounded damn good, all things considered, because they were, after all, master tapes.

However, we always knew it could sound even better. And given historic nature of the material and the source, The Ties That Bind deserved an upgraded transfer. In late 2010, that finally happened. There was baking involved, as the tapes had degraded in the two decades since the initial transfer was made. This time, the reel-to-reel tape deck was best of breed, what the pros use, in a proper studio, calibrated and adjusted in every way for optimal playback and capture at 24/96 using the best possible sound card, cabling, etc. The nature of how this transfer was made compels me to be silent on the equipment details, but suffice it to say that no one among us to could make a transfer this good.

But The Ties That Bind already sounded great, so how much better could an upgrade be? Well, we think it is materially upgraded, everything you ever loved about the original TTTB only better. The stereo separation is improved, the highs higher and the lows lower. Quoting my own original notes, "the only sonic flaw is on the introduction to Stolen Car. Because of the extremely quiet nature of the piano passage that begins the song, some hiss is evident on the CD that would have been masked on an LP…so the hiss has been left intact."

For all intents and purposes that hiss is now gone/dramatically reduced, not through computer noise reduction but proper playback. The 24/96 capture and superior playback deck simply extracted more out of the tape than the DAT and rental unit did the first time around. And, we're making both the CD-quality and 24/96 high resolution files available to you. Consider this the audiophile edition of The Ties That Bind.

For mastering, we enlisted Erno, the man behind the EV2 releases and collaborator on prior JEMS upgrades, to apply a very light touch in the spirit of the original EQ notes on the tape boxes. We stayed away from heavy compression and anything that would modernize the sound. Our goal was to make it sound as good as it could and should have in 1980. And it still sounds better than the official CD of The River.

What's remarkable in 2011 is that most tracks on this "temporary assembly" of the album remain unreleased. "Cindy" is the one major River outtake that Bruce is still sitting on. The alternate verse in "The Price You Pay" remains lost. The rockabilly "You Better Not Touch" has never seen the light of day, nor the double-tracked vocal take of "To Be True." "Stolen Car" is a different take to the one on Tracks and even "The Ties That Bind," "The River" and "I Wanna Marry You" are each alternate takes or mixes from the released versions. "Hungry Heart" and now "Loose Ends" are the most like their official selves, but still distinct.

With this release, one of the most important unreleased recordings in the Springsteen bootleg canon finally gets remastered. Shame that we are getting to it before he gets to The River, isn't it?

Notes:
Here's another gem from the vaults of Krzquest. Van Halen on none other than the DKRC show via 1982 ! This video document contains 1 promo vid ( Oh , Pretty Woman ) 3 live songs filmed from an unknown location ( the venue has been argued about by fans for years , but I'm convinced nobody really knows where this was filmed. Please correct me if you have updated info ) And 5 interview segments hosted by Jim Ladd @ the home of " Diamond Dave " himself. The interviews are priceless and are in and of themselves worth the DL imho ...

Quality stands as 8.5 video and a solid 9 for audio. There is a VHS noise bar at the bottom of the screen throughout the entire vid , but it is small and not a distraction whatsoever.

Notes by the uploader:
Comprised here are all BBC sessions of Patto as collected by DIME member rhoudaille over several years. It has a few recordings missing but I wanted to leave his collection unaltered. By the way, this was rhoudaille's first upload here...a great way to start things!

Nothing on out of this collection has been used on commercial releases, and there are definitely no plans to release any of this material in the near future.

Following are rhoudaille's original notes, with updated links at the end:

I have compiled all the BBC recordings of PATTO that I have, which span over multiple sources,
so please excuse a clear "source" lineage.

There is a PATTO BBC Sessions bootleg, LIFE AFTER DEATH, which is basically included here;
however, I have better quality copies of some of those tracks so I decided to make this
compilation to present a chronological and best possible sounding collection of this rare material.
It is pretty complete too! Only 6 tracks missing... I know they're out there! Any one got 'em? Let us know! Additional information alongside the tracklisting.

Observations:
As usual, the info was taken from Nico Zentgraf ( http://www.nzentgraf.de/books/tcw/works1.htm ), not from the backcover of the CD, which by the way, is not 100% accurate:

1. Tracks 1, 2, 5, 6, 12, 13, 14, 15 were not recorded at Musicland Studios, Munich, April 1974 like the backcover said, and some sites repeated, Http://www.stonesvikingrob.com/bootl..._head_soup.htm and http://www.bootlegarchive.com/media_...?MediaID=37430

2. On April 1974, the Stones were in England (Newbury & London), not in Munich.

3. The Stones were in Munich on January (14th - 28th) recording early versions and primitive takes of Dance Little Sister, Drift Away, If You Really Want To Be My Friend, Living In The Heart Of Love, Luxury, Till The Next Goodbye, Time Waits For No One, Labour Swing, but I don't think any of the CD tracks are early versions or primitive takes.

4. The Stones were again in Munich on December (7th - 15th) (without Mick Taylor!), but they did not play any of the tracks from this CD. In fact, they played Act Together, Cherry Oh Baby, Fool To Cry, I Got A Letter.

4. Tracks 1, 2, 5, 6, 12, 13, 14, 15 were recorded at Newbury, England, Stargroves (MJ’s house), Rolling Stones Mobile Studio (1974, April 10th - 15th) and London, Island Recording Studios (1974, May 20th - 25th)

Notes:
There was a VHS compilation called "Bang Bang" in the box from Andre F.  Three hours' worth, and stated to be a compilation of stuff from '87.
In the event, there was a fair bit of stuff that was from 1990 (and a couple of bits from '83 as well), so I've put those aside for now, and added in some bits from other tapes I got from Andre. In all, nineteen nuggets, sixteen from promiting Never Let Me Down and Glass Spider, three from the "Invaders At The Palace" appearance with La-La Human Steps.
Quality is variable, between blurry and black & white (much of the Italian stuff) and near perfection (The Tube, Invaders At The Palace).  Some clips are a couple of minutes, whereas The Tube's a good half hour.

For many months now, Chrisedge and I have been working on a compilation of various pro-shot bits, many of which have not seen the light of day before or are not widely circulated. We finally got it all on one disc under the title Godfathers of the Zoo.

The disc opens with one of my favorite pieces of U2 video ever. In 1988 I befriended an Island employee who sent me several in-house VHS tapes. On one is this amazing little skit the boys did for a WEA (at the time Island's distribution partner) sales convention. The Godfather parody has been around in various forms and I think you can even find it on YouTube, but from what I have been led to believe, it has never been sourced from a known generation in high quality. This is a direct transfer from the Island in-house VHS.

Also on the same tape was an alternate version of Meiert Avis' video for "With or Without You." It features a lot of the same band images but different and more interstitial imagery. In my opinion it is, on the whole, dreamier.

Next comes the better part of three pro-shot songs from the LA stop on the Amnesty tour. I've had this footage since the early '90s from a well-connected LA source though it was the only U2 thing he ever gave me. It's definitely a few gens down but very watchable. There are a couple of minor glitches which ChrisEdge did a nice job repairing.

A pair of three-song, pro-shot feeds follow from early stops on arena leg of the Zoo TV tour. The Boston footage comes from a local TV source, while the NY footage was aired on a local TV show called Irish Eyes. Love the local girls at the start. Then it's a fantastic "Until the End of the World," from Sacramento 4/17/92, as aired by MTV during some special which escapes me.

The satellite feed footage of Detroit 9/9/92 has been around before and was posted here. My copy is a first gen. off the master, obtained in 1992. I've seen other low gen sources of this before that look very good but I'd give this one the edge though perhaps I'm just biased. Regardless it is here, along with the audio-only portions of the feed and the award ceremony.

Lastly we have some fine, inside-the-heart news camera footage from Anaheim 4/26/01. The songs are not complete but I found them exciting just the same. That Kangol hat you see in the first few seconds sure looks like he's taping to me.

Thanks to Chrisedge for all his hard work on this. No thanks whatsoever to FedEx who lost three master tapes.

In addition to the great interview, (many locations, including a driving tour through Paul's childhood neighborhood) this one has some fine music woven in.

From the Los Angeles Times review... Chris Willman - June 9th, 1990 -

The hour-long special, "Paul Simon: Solo" covers unusual territory.  It's the rare musician profile that first focuses in on music itself and then makes an interesting case for it. For that we can thank the British, for the show has proper, unsensationalist BBC origins. Interviewer Mark Steyn peers into Simon's handwritten songwriting notebook and gets a look at how the lyric for "Hearts and Bones" developed from an altogether different idea, thanks to a borrowed line from Yeats.  He asks Simon how "Mother and Child Reunion" would have sounded had it been recorded as first intended, in a ska instead of a reggae style (the islanders informed Simon in the early '70s that ska was already "out"), and Simon picks up the guitar and demonstrates.Simon even picks apart one of his favorite and least successful songs, "Rene and George Magritte With Their Dog After the War," and wryly notes, "To be realistic about it, the people that have heard of Magritte haven't heard of the Penguins and the Four Satins and the Moonglows (and vice versa) . . . so it's a very small audience that I'm addressing."  The show does a remarkable job of covering the breadth of Simon's career--from his seminal attempts at "teen-king music" through his time with Art Garfunkel through a wide-ranging 20-year solo career--in a short time, with economical use of vintage clips.  As slow and carefully as Simon speaks, you feel like you've gotten two hours' worth of information in half the time.

Review:
To follow in their 'GBS' series, Scorpio released their own version of the recent White Bear release 'A Tree With Roots' in this incredible multi-fold out packaging. This is not a direct copy of the previous release. While the quality remains the same, there are a few differences in the track order. Compare the two. The packaging is simply astounding. The tri-fold album is full of breathtaking photos, and houses four cardboard inner sleeves. Each inner sleeve contains a CD, and lists the full track information on the back.
