Notes: I never thought that I would get an opportunity to see Simon & Garfunkel live; I grew up as a metal fan, but, had a special place for S&G, as the 'Bookends' and 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' albums were soundtracks to an especially difficult time in my teen life. I had seen Paul Simon twice before, and while he wasn't (and isn't) an especially dynamic live performer, those songs are such a huge part of the cultural fabric, that it isn't even a question of 'if' I was going to see this concert when it was announced.
It came at an especially difficult period in my life - I was in the middle of getting divorced. In fact, the tickets I had for this concert were part of the negotiation with my ex. She wasn't a fan, but, knew that I wanted very much to go, so, she decided she was keeping the tickets. I ended up relenting, and buying another pair - but, all that was left was way in the back (albeit dead center). So, I took my buddy Loudpuppy, who had, earlier that summer, started videotaping concerts, with the idea that he would film this one.
As far as I know, this is the torrent site debut of this show, direct from his master DV tapes. The show itself is back to back hits; unlike earlier S&G reunions, this performance is very light on Simon solo songs (only 'American Tune', which he identifies as being most S&G of his solo music, and 'Slip Slidin' Away' are played), and goes very deep into the five albums they made together. I was surprised and delighted to hear songs like 'Keep the Customer Satisfied' and 'Hazy Shade of Winter.' The version of 'I Am A Rock' is also a huge standout.
Loudpuppy caught some great shows in his filming days (he stopped some time ago), and this one is amongst the best: the camera is pretty much centered on the screens, with occasional shots of the stage. The sound is boomy, but, very listenable. This was a terrific concert that gets much airplay in my house. As it happens, the very next day was the first date I went on with my now wife, of whom I have described so much in other shared torrents.
