Prof sez:
A great recording, for the first time with complete line-age. Sadly, this is not complete, unlike other versions circulating. But as far as I know, this is the first digitally recorded FM version, so it should be an upgrade.

This was show was banned here before on dime, because of the track "Wake Up and Live": which has been officially released. That track was not included in this re-broadcast. To my best knowledge and reseach, nothing here has been officially release.

The Vara did a truly great job in recording and mixing this. Just love that big bass sound that only reggae bassists seem to have. The trackorder is probably not chronicle, as it is very different from the trackorder of the bootleg w/ the complete version. But I left everything as is. Just raised the volume a bit.

I recorded this at someone else's house from the FM cable, using my own tuner and digital recorder. I had the hardest time finding the right radio frequency, because the radio station I tried to find on the cable is on a different frequency in my own town. I started searching half an hour before the broadcast. But as time went by, I could not find what I was looking for. Then miracleously, I found the right frequency just 10 seconds before the concert started ! Pheeeew....

Willie Nelson - 1978-04-xx - Lake Tahoe, NV (FM/FLAC)

(FM Broadcast FLAC)

Harrah's Casino

This is an absolutely fabulous Willie Nelson & Family recording from April, 1978 at Lake Tahoe's Harrah's Casino. As you can see, this is a master FM broadcast recording by D&D, and transferred by JEMS. (This is D & D Archives Master Series Volume 23.) There are a few issues right at the beginning of the recording but it clears up quickly and does not recur. As you can see, this is the (or at least a) "classic" Family lineup playing an absolutely killer setlist, at least in my not particularly humble opinion.

I have a note here indicating that "…this was a multi-show stand, and some performances were used on the "Willie And Family Live 2-lp set, but none of these performances specific to the torrent are on it, I compared them having the LP…"

My wife lumps Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Tom Waits and others who can't really seem to sing on key/don't have "pretty" voices (whateverthehell that means! HA!). In any event, this definitely would not be one for her ears.

Source/lineage (in red):

"Over The Air FM Broadcast

"Transfer: 1st gen reel>Revox A77>Wavelab 96/24"

MD5, ffp and the original text file included. I have not included this intro as I made only minor alterations to the original text file (which remains unchanged) to create this intro. All of the music and info files come to you exactly as they came to me.

One more thing: Please note that I am, as always, simply the messenger. All thanks go to wildbluesage, D&D, JEMS, and, of course, the musicians and technicians. A very humble "thank you!" from Luckymudster to one and all.

From this legendary show, we have this 50 min board - unfortunately it's a rather bad board, even on this low-gen recording. SA/FA doesn't look very good, but as should be obvious from the amount of hiss, no NR has been applied.

» Audiowhore on the remaster: "As everyone knows, it’s a great show but the recording is hampered by the hiss factor. I’ve put it on Cool Edit Pro and filtered out the hiss, given it a very slight re-EQ, and changed the track marks to make them more accurate as to where the songs actually start."» D1 fixed these problems, post-audiowhore:
t01: about 40 seconds of tuning and silence at start of track
t05: bit of feedback at 3:59; banter level is a bit low
t06: four bits of feedback after the tune

“Military Night"– Original Master Series
U.S. Military Academy, Eisenhower Hall, West Point, NY
May 27, 1976

Cassette>CDR>Roxio>flac

Here is the latest in the ‘Original Master Series” made possible by Mr Anonymous. 2 master tape sources were used for this project, so Mr Anonymous had some help that night. Born To Run is not complete with an obvious edit toward the last minute or so using the second tape source as filler. Jungleland has a very slight cut in. Detroit Medley uses the second source to fill in the end. Overall, the show is very enjoyable and worth having. Thanks goes out to Lawrence Kirsch for his wonderful book FOR YOU, which came in handy for the artwork. Specifically Michael Butkus took the photos, so he gets a BIG THANK YOU!

Fanatic Records in association with Mr Anonymous is proud to share this original master recording with Bruce Springsteen worldwide!

Notes from BruceBase:
Audience tape. A fan remembers "Us commoners had to sit in the last five or six rows as the cadets, decked out in dress whites, had all of the rest of the theater. The sound was amazing. The big crescendos of Growin' Up seemed to move through us from left to right. I mentioned that to Bruce at the Stone Pony before Southside's 05/30/76 radio broadcast and he said that Eisenhower Hall was supposed to be one of the best acoustic theaters in the country. I believe it."

20 years of the First concert by Morphine in Portugal. I was there and it was a blast. All this festival was. It was the first organized festival of the modern age. There have been festival before but not regular events as it became from this point on. Looking back it was a great moment in time with a great line up and fabulous performances and Morphine was one of them. Playing in day time, i believe it was around 6 or 7pm, their show was tight short and great surprise for many people there. They were straight to our hearts and stayed there until Mark's death. Every show in Portugal was a party you didn't want to miss. This recording is a proshot from the cameras on stage and it is not complete because the cameras were not working since the begining of the show due to sunlight on the screens as the sun went down the cameras were on and filmed the last 5 songs. Somehow i managed to get my hands on a gen1 copy of this video and it is what i am sharing here today. It is a short but cool video with good sound.

Bruce Springsteen - 1974-10-29 - Boston, MA (AUD/FLAC) Steve Hopkins master via JEMS by REQUEST

(Audience FLAC)

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Boston Music Hall
Boston, MA
October 29, 1974
Steve Hopkins master via JEMS
40th Anniversary 16/44.1 Edition

Taping Gear: AKG 707E mics > Sony TC-152SD, FOB, microphones hand-held

2014 JEMS Transfer: SH master cassettes > Nakamichi CR-7A azimuth-adjusted transfer > Sound Devices USBPre 2 > Audacity 2.0 (24/96) capture > iZotope RX3 > iZotope Ozone 5 via Peak 6 (pitch correction) > Peak Pro XT (volume smoothing / edit / indexed) > 24/96 > 16/44.1 > xACT 2.21 > FLAC

101 Incident on 57th Street
102 Spirit in the Night
103 Does This Bus Stop At 82nd Street
104 The E Street Shuffle > Havin' a Party
105 Cupid
106 Saint in the City
107 Jungleland
201 She's the One
202 Kitty's Back
203 New York City Serenade
204 Rosalita
205 Sandy
206 A Love So Fine

JEMS is pleased to once again partner with taper Steve Hopkins to present fresh and (hopefully) definitive transfers of his outstanding master recordings. Hopkins taped Springsteen nine times between 1974 and 1977, and this is the ninth and final release in our series revisiting his seminal work. What a place to end.

The Suki Lahav-era of the E Street Band is one of its most enchanting, as her violin playing added poignant texture and musical depth to songs like "Incident on 57th Street" and "Jungleland." The period also served as the prelude to Springsteen's third album and this show offers wonderful, embryonic versions of "She's the One" (including some lyrics that would later appear in "Backstreets") and the aforementioned "Jungleland."

Late 1974-early 1975 is also a transition phase from the jazzier explorations of the second album to the mini rock operas found on Born to Run. The former gets its due this night, as the band flexes its muscles on "Kitty's Back" and an epic "New York City Serenade," blissfully complete here in all its 21-plus-minutes glory. That performance alone is worth the price of admission/download.

The definitive recording from Suki's tenure is without a doubt the WMMR-broadcasted Main Point February 5, 1975 performance. For my money, Hopkins' pull from October 29, 1974 is a close second. The new line-up with Max and Roy and Suki's addition are still fresh, and every song and arrangement feels alive in the moment. It is a magical performance and a must for anyone interested in this chapter in the band's history.

It also doesn't hurt that Hopkins did such a remarkable job capturing the show. This was one of a few times he recorded using two AKG mics, which proved unwieldy. Given his location so close to the front, with sound reaching the mics both from the PA and the band's gear on stage, the stereo image shifts noticeably as the mics move in several spots on the tape. You'll recognize those as passages where the sound gets thinner/narrower or fatter/wider (the first minute of “Cupid” is a good example), but they don't materially detract from the overall recording.

Otherwise the band is right there, up close. JEMS did a little work to tame and shape the bass, which was way up on the master tape (a recurring theme of late). Circulating versions of this recording also seem to suffer from some wow and flutter, and even with the fluctuations noted above, we think this transfer smoothes out most of those previous issues, resulting in a more consistent and balanced final product. Samples provided.

Additional Notes:
Dr. John opened the show

Hopkins recorded from the second row of the center orchestra section on the floor

This was Suki Lahav’s eleventh performance with the E Street Band

One of four known performances of Sam Cooke’s “Cupid”

The Boston College student newspaper review of the show refers to the piano player as “Roy Bippy”

This was the first of ten Springsteen performances at the Music Hall 1974-78
Steve first torrented this show from his master cassettes eight years ago, but that lineage went from cassette to DAT to CD-R then ripped back into FLAC. This is the first time Steve's master tapes have been digitized directly.

Thanks one more time to Steve Hopkins for allowing JEMS to present his outstanding audience recordings in a fresh light. He was was not only in the right place at the right time to capture these early performances, but he was the right man for the job, too. Thanks also to mjk5510 who once again steps up in service of the community to take this project over the finish line.

JEMS is pleased to release the first in a series of recordings made by legendary taper Mike Millard, AKA Mike the MICrophone, best known for his masters of Led Zeppelin in and around LA circa 1975-77.

The 14 first-generation tapes (ten cassettes and four reels) were sent by Millard to SG, the beloved S in JEMS, in the mid-'80s after the pair had met in person in Orange County on two occasions. To the best of our knowledge, none of the eight shows (spanning the 14 tapes) has ever been attributed as a Millard recording. In fact, there are no extant references we are aware of to Millard ever recording Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen, the two artists captured on the tapes.

Several of the tapes we believe are uncirculated; others may be out there, but not credited as Millard's work. Even those that turn out to be previously circulated (and there is at least one confirmed so far) will be released in this series from verified first-generation tapes made by Millard himself and marked/ notated in his signature manner. As such, we expect all of them to be upgrades at a minimum and new sources in many cases.

At this point you might be asking yourself, "So if JEMS received these Millard tapes in the mid-'80s, why haven't they circulated previously?" Fair question. And in condensed form, here is the answer, which also provides the "Lost" portion of our series title:

Twenty-six years ago, Millard sent SG a box of tapes. I remember having it my hands in 1986 at SG's house, right after it arrived in the mail. But that was the last time I ever saw the box. It disappeared. Nearly all of SG's tapes have since been consolidated into the JEMS North archive, but we never found the box of Millard tapes. Over the years, my memory faded of what was in the box. I thought there were Springsteen shows, but that fuzzy notion was all I could recall.

Now to the "Found": A few months ago, WG, a long-time collector friend of SG, contacted him and said, "I found a box of tapes of yours when I was moving furniture." Sure enough it was the Millard tapes and more. Turns out WG borrowed the tapes and some other SG masters after a Dylan show in 1986 and the box wound up misplaced and forgotten about by both parties, only to be rediscovered 28 years later.

Once the box was returned, SG sent it to me at JEMS South where we proceeded to make fresh transfers of its contents.

If there's any mildly disappointing element to this otherwise charming story, it is that none of the lost Millard tapes are of previously uncirculated shows; there are other recordings by other tapers of all of them. But the good news is the quality of most of them is indeed up to Millard's legendary standards. There are some excellent pulls here, and in at least one case, Millard's recording is more complete than the circulating source.

Our series opens with Dylan's summer residency at the Universal Amphitheatre in June 1978. This recording is of the opening night of the run, but the tape is incomplete. Millard's notes state: "Missed first half of concert. Only recorded from intermission on."

But what Millard did record is, to my ears, awfully good. I haven't compared it to the two other known recordings (per Lossless Bob) of this show, but it is hard to imagine they could top this. The notes don't confirm Millard's infamous wheelchair taping set up, but they do confirm exactly what microphones were used (AKG 451E with CK-1 capsules) and his familiar Nakamichi 550 recorder. Interestingly, at another show in this run, Millard used a completely different set of gear, but we'll get to that when the time comes.

Millard's notes (posted in the comments section and included in the torrent) also famously warn the recipient, "This tape has been electronically coded. If this recording is reproduced and falls into the wrong hands I will know where the original source came from. Please do not reproduced (sic) this tape." Sadly, we can't request Millard's permission, given his untimely passing in 1990. But we hope enough time has passed that we can honor his work by sharing it in a manner he could have never dreamed would be possible three decades ago.

Thanks to WG for finding the tapes and to SG for providing JEMS with another fascinating chapter of taping history.
