Notes by the uploader:
This release is sourced from trade CD-r's. It's an audience recording. It's not the complete show. The opening songs Embryo and Fat Old Sun are missing. Cymbaline is cut just after the footstep sequence begins.

I removed a total of 49 gaps, bad edits, diginoise spikes and checked the speed. I have included a file pf1971-10-31 (T-1606)edits removed.flac which contains all the sound from the edits made when sound was deleted. If you burn as audio I wouldn't recomend including this file on the audio disc. I did the editing, mastering (tweaking), and artwork for this version of this show. Don't add, change or remove any of these files. Please keep the text, md5 and artwork files unaltered, together with the FLAC's. Don't rename directories or file names if you share this. My concern is that when people rename them they drop information like date, venue, location, T number. This information is useful to others when searching for or deciding which version of a show they want or already have.

Show Notes
The tour was in support of The Last Record Album. The band had just finished doing 5 consecutive nights at Paul's Mall (small Boston Club of the era) and this performance was recorded at the Orpheum Theatre (2500 seats) on the night following that run. Perhaps the 5 previous nights help account for the band's over-the-top tightness and rhythmic pocket heard on this performance.

This show was originally broadcast live on WBCN 104.1 FM in Boston. There was at least one re-broadcast on WBCN about 6 months after the show.

Mix Notes
The main source for this 2-source mix is the FM re-broadcast for obvious reasons. It is very crisp and sounds fabulous! However, there are lots of drop outs and cuts throughout and there are 4 songs missing. All missing songs, cuts and dropouts were patched using the davmar77 recording. There are too many patches to mention them all but the big ones are an 11 second patch in On Your Way Down, an 11 second patch in All That You Dream and a 9 second patch in Romance Dance. There was also lots of extra stage banter between songs and crowd noise that was patched in for completeness including about an extra minute on the introduction from the house MC. Almost every song had at least one small drop out that was usually located in the beginning of the song. Those are hardly noticeable now. The 4 extra songs not included on the re-broadcast were One Love Stand, Rock And Roll Doctor, Down Below The Borderline and Sailin' Shoes. These are of course included here from the davmar77 source. The quality is considerably different than the re-broadcast but still nice quality. There are major problems with Down Below The Borderline from the PA or Radio on all sources. I did not make any attempt to fix anything here. It is simply included for completeness. It sounds fine at about 1:50 in.

All radio dj banter has been removed where possible.

Home Away From Home
The band Kansas started as a small musical project in the heartland of America. As they grew in popularity they formed a bond with the people of the East coast state of Pennsylvania. During the early years, Kansas played the great north east state as a warm up band for headliners such as The Kinks, Mott the Hoople and Queen. By 1975, Kansas because a headliner themselves and played an impressive concert at the Stanley Theater in downtown Pittsburgh in
December of that year. In October of 1976, they were back to play for their Pittsburgh fans again.
This time, it was at the Syria Mosque; site of a very impressive Genesis concert just six months before. They brought with them a band called Ambrosia from California to warm up the crowd.
Both bands were making their name in the developing genre of Progressive Rock but Kansas, with their unique driving melodies and use of violin was the band everyone was coming to see.
Kansas had just released another impressive album called Leftoverture, the fourth album in just two years. With this productive output and their tireless devotion to touring, Kansas was developing a loyal fan base. The previous album Masque sold 250,000 copies but this new album Leftoverture would push them over the top. Songs like Carry On Wayward Son would help to boost the new album to number 5 on the charts. The Pittsburgh crowd at the Syria Mosque was one of the first to hear this new material. The Leftoverture tour had just started the month before and the band were already masters at performing the new material.
The show presented on these discs consists of three parts. First is the Kansas
concert itself. The band provides a nice mixture of both old and new material for the enjoyment of the crowd. The second piece is an interview of the band members that occurred at the end of the concert. During this interview they discuss the tuxedo worn during the performance by Rick Williams, the masks worn by many of the band members during the show and many other things. The final segment is the Ambrosia performance. As the warm up band, they did play before Kansas but for the purposes of this package putting them at the end of the discs seemed appropriate.
The exact date of this performance is still in question. During the interview a
reference is made to Halloween. As the show likely finished after midnight this would give the date as October 30th. Other sources argue that the masks worn on stage were, in part, motivated by the fact that the concert was occurring on October 31st. Either way, this show is an excellent record of the bands power and proficiency as one of the leading Progressive Rock bands of the
era.

Notes from the Re-Master
This great Kansas show was remastered from a CD copy of the original Pre-FM radio station tapes. The sound quality is excellent with harmonics and music signal up to 18,000 Hz. The clarity and crispness of the sound are also superb, however a number of changes needed to be made to improve the show. First, the noise level was moderate in volume and interfered with the appreciation of the subtle and quieter sections; therefore it was reduced. The tracking was
incomplete and off in some sections so tracking was re-aligned. The tonality also needed adjustment. Mostly, the bass was deficient and needed boosting. In a few sections the frequencies in the 5-8kHz (treble) range were cut to remove a piercing characteristic to the symbol crashes and other high pitched events.
Applause sections were often inconsistent or cut. Some were too loud and others too short. We attempted to obtain some uniformity in the applause sections between songs to enhance the listening experience.
The interview track was obtained from a separate tape source. At its baseline this recording had quite a bit of shrill loud noise that was reduced as much as possible. It is most noticeable between spoken words but, using multiple techniques, now has been minimized.
The Ambrosia tracks were obtained from a third source and were not part of the master radio tapes. The quality is good but not at the outstanding level of the Kansas segments.
Noise was in the high range for this segment so a great deal of time was spent reducing the offending component. Many pops also occurred during this segment that required manual removal even after whole-segment routines were run to remove these noises. Many segments of the Ambrosia tracks were also at low volume and needed adjustment to be comparable to the remainder of the show. This was easily done.

'Sup, guys, how about a little January Surprise? Nothing too TERRIBLY mind-blowing here... just, you know, the longest show FZ ever played, and one of those pesky "must-have" shows in the FZShows oeuvre.

Seriously now, really and truly, what needs to be said about this one? Zappa, O'Hearn, Shankar, special guests, epic jams (Packard Goose - does anything more need to be said?), oftimes-bizarre rarities (dig that Idiot Bastard Son - the backing music sounding almost like Läther) and old standby favorites (probably the finest version of Watermelon in Easter Hay ever played live) all unite for nearly four hours of absolute magic.

Just to scratch the very surface of what's on offer here: we have twelve minutes of relative dead air (Ms. X and, even moreso, Nancy's Life Story). Bobby Brown is played. The bass on Easy Meat is really... out of tune. Those fifteen minutes combined are the lowpoint of the show.

The high point? If I had to choose just one (which, evidently, I do), I'd go with Packard Goose. Nearly twenty minutes of blisteringly intense soloing from both Zappa and Shankar which, were it not for the "recent" discovery of the final fifteen minutes of the show, would be easy to consider the "climax" (in a dramatic sense) of the night. Considering that, as I already mentioned, this show also features what may well be the finest Watermelon in Easter Hay ever performed before a live audience (as well as some positively sick soloing in other places), I think considering Packard Goose the highlight is saying something.

About that "recent" discovery hidden in that previous paragraph: Evidently there were two very-well-prepared tapers in the audience that night. One of them made his recording from the floor, the other from the balcony. I believe it's the balcony recording which has been in circulation since the 1980s, but someone may have to correct me. Anyway, the other recording didn't see wide circulation until sometime in the late 1990s (late 1998, to hear Foggy G tell it).

It had always irked me that this show was incomplete, especially when we knew a complete "patch" was out there. Of all the shows to be left in an incomplete condition, why this one!? Why the Big One? Of course, I devoted the next year or so of my life to bitching about this fact whenever remotely possible, until one day, from out of the blue, our very own flambay contacted me, with news that was not just exciting, but downright STARTLING.

Not only was this second source out there - this second source, containing nearly ten minutes of breath-taking Deathless Horsie jamming - but, in a development which I had completely forgotten about, it was a COMPLETE version of this second source. In other words, a version which could be used for - wait for it - PATCHES!

Yes, the original source of this show was a very nice sounding recording, but suffered from one major flaw: Of the four extended numbers (Pound, Little House, Packard, Black Napkins / Deathless), only one of them did not feature a tape-flip at some point. Nothing more frustrating than hearing that delicious guitar slam kick off the solo section to Packard Goose, only to be yanked back to reality as the violin solo quickly fades out.

Well, okay, plenty of more frustrating things (tapes running out with no replacement, for instance), but still, tape cuts suck.

Long story short: Thanks to flambay, each and every tape cut has been patched with the alternate source, which sounds a bit darker (strangely devoid of ambience - maybe it's the balcony recording? Who knows!), and each and every minute has been speed corrected.

While there -may- be an even more superlative version out there (the patch source claims to be from a master recording, but shows clear signs of NR), this is still at the very least 95% "as good as it gets" (the main source being a probable second-gen), and sometimes - very, very rarely, but sometimes - the prospect of a little post-holiday surprise trumps Official Procedure.

For even more thoughts on this show ("the show of shows" itself!), or just something to get you even more psyched to get this little nugget downloaded, check out Foggy G's take right here, and if you still can't get enough, head on over to this entry on the sadly-defunct FZ Tape Reviewer's Society. Just ignore all those words about tape-flips - none to be found here Very Happy

Len Talk:
***before THE WINDOW:
This is another song. It's from my new album. It's called 'The Window'. It's a kind of a prayer to, you know, bring two parts of the soul together. It's called 'The Window'.
***after THE WINDOW:
My great violinist, Raffi Hakopian from Armenia!
***before MEMORIES
This is a song that I wrote a couple of years ago with the great genius of darkest Hollywood, Phil Spector. And it's a song based on my extremely boring and pathetic life at Westmount High School in Montreal. It's called, 'Memories'.
***after MEMORIES:
Sharon Robinson! Jennifer Warnes! Paul Ostermeyer! Bill Ginn! Raffi Hakopian! Steve Meador! Roscoe Beck! Mitch Watkins! John Bilezikjian! Let's do another song...
***before THE GUESTS:
This is a new song and I'm very surprised that this song has gained any kind of popularity, because it is a kind of a difficult song. I think most of its popularity is due to the fact that Raffi Hakopian plays on it. And John Bilezikjian. But... It's a song about how a new soul comes into the world looking for the feast, feeling completely separated from everything, feeling isolated and in exile. And how the Great Author of this dismal catastrophy, this vale of tears, pulls each of these souls into the feast and into the banquet. And no one knows where the night is going. No one knows why the wine is flowing. And, oh love, I need you, I need you, I need you, I need you, I need you...
***before SUZANNE:
It's not a matter of my wanting or not wanting to play, but I think that the television programme is over and it's time for all of us to go home...
[Director cuts in:] Leonard, do us a favour - one more.
Yeah. One more? Sure! It's pleasure. We have time? Yes. Okay.

Here is the complete Halloween 1981 extravaganza, in nearly complete soundboard form. (The first two tracks of the early show were missing and are taken from an audience recording here.) The late show was broadcast live on MTV. Imagine that happening today! This version of the late show is not a broadcast version. It is either a PRE-FM or a straight up board tape like the early show. The sound quality is about as good as you can get for a 1981 board tape.

Notes:
Frank Zappa's New York Halloween 1981 concerts were filmed live at the Palladium. 'The Torture Never Stops' was created in its entirety by Zappa from the original concert production and intended as one of three television specials. All Frank Zappa shows were unique experiences with Zappa on guitar and baton, leading his band on flights of improvisation and drawing ever more intense performances from them. 'The Torture Never Stops' cements Zappa's reputation as one of the most innovative and challenging composers and performers of the 20th century.

Notes:
I once read somewhere in another tracker this ultimate advice "Don't buy bootlegs!"
I'd say that sometimes it's worth buying them when they're made from great recordings, have great packages, and furthermore when it's the only way left to get rare or quite rare stuff. It's such the case here, here's some new fresh recording.
It couldn't be more fresh, I received this one this morning and promised to Steveboy I'd upload it as soon as I receive it so do I...
This is a perfect soundquality version of the fantastic Kyoto 1983 show!
Truly, a great bootleg and definitely an upgrade to the audience version already on Bowiestation which was audience sourced (https://www.bowiestation.com/torrents-details.php?id=1638) still great to listen too though.
Just showing it's possible to find some true upgrade gems not available yet in BS getting the Wardour releases.
I renamed all the tracks from 1 to 26 to get the whole show without opening the Disc1-Disc2 folders, I myself prefer it presented like that. Once dowloaded you can use the above list to re-arrange the songs back to these folders again if you like.

While I do not know the generation of the VHS, this show is so crystal clear, both video AND audio, I would wager the DVD was authored from the master VHS.
