Notes:
Unlike most upgrades, this 2011 edition of The Ties That Bind utilizes the same source tapes: a pair of 15 IPS, half-track reels that turned up at a Pasadena swap meet in the early '90s. The initial transfer of those reels--from which, to be clear, ALL known copies and releases emanate--was done on a rented open-reel tape deck to DAT at 16 bit/48 kHz. There was no playback azimuth correction. No demagnetization of the heads (at least they were cleaned between tape sides). No correcting for balanced/unbalanced connections. In short, it was the best transfer that could be made given the time and circumstances (c'mon, we were kids then) and it sounded damn good, all things considered, because they were, after all, master tapes.
However, we always knew it could sound even better. And given historic nature of the material and the source, The Ties That Bind deserved an upgraded transfer. In late 2010, that finally happened. There was baking involved, as the tapes had degraded in the two decades since the initial transfer was made. This time, the reel-to-reel tape deck was best of breed, what the pros use, in a proper studio, calibrated and adjusted in every way for optimal playback and capture at 24/96 using the best possible sound card, cabling, etc. The nature of how this transfer was made compels me to be silent on the equipment details, but suffice it to say that no one among us to could make a transfer this good.
But The Ties That Bind already sounded great, so how much better could an upgrade be? Well, we think it is materially upgraded, everything you ever loved about the original TTTB only better. The stereo separation is improved, the highs higher and the lows lower. Quoting my own original notes, "the only sonic flaw is on the introduction to Stolen Car. Because of the extremely quiet nature of the piano passage that begins the song, some hiss is evident on the CD that would have been masked on an LP…so the hiss has been left intact."
For all intents and purposes that hiss is now gone/dramatically reduced, not through computer noise reduction but proper playback. The 24/96 capture and superior playback deck simply extracted more out of the tape than the DAT and rental unit did the first time around. And, we're making both the CD-quality and 24/96 high resolution files available to you. Consider this the audiophile edition of The Ties That Bind.
For mastering, we enlisted Erno, the man behind the EV2 releases and collaborator on prior JEMS upgrades, to apply a very light touch in the spirit of the original EQ notes on the tape boxes. We stayed away from heavy compression and anything that would modernize the sound. Our goal was to make it sound as good as it could and should have in 1980. And it still sounds better than the official CD of The River.
What's remarkable in 2011 is that most tracks on this "temporary assembly" of the album remain unreleased. "Cindy" is the one major River outtake that Bruce is still sitting on. The alternate verse in "The Price You Pay" remains lost. The rockabilly "You Better Not Touch" has never seen the light of day, nor the double-tracked vocal take of "To Be True." "Stolen Car" is a different take to the one on Tracks and even "The Ties That Bind," "The River" and "I Wanna Marry You" are each alternate takes or mixes from the released versions. "Hungry Heart" and now "Loose Ends" are the most like their official selves, but still distinct.
With this release, one of the most important unreleased recordings in the Springsteen bootleg canon finally gets remastered. Shame that we are getting to it before he gets to The River, isn't it?

Here's another gem from the vaults of Krzquest. Van Halen on none other than the DKRC show via 1982 ! This video document contains 1 promo vid ( Oh , Pretty Woman ) 3 live songs filmed from an unknown location ( the venue has been argued about by fans for years , but I'm convinced nobody really knows where this was filmed. Please correct me if you have updated info ) And 5 interview segments hosted by Jim Ladd @ the home of " Diamond Dave " himself. The interviews are priceless and are in and of themselves worth the DL imho ...

Comments: I saw Total Eclipse repackaged. It is in a white folder type thing that looks like a fairly cheap plastic holder. I assume it folds open and has two discs on each side (it was that sort of size). The artwork is a faded version of the original, sporting the Great Dane dog head on the spine but no catalogue number or bar code on the back. No clue about the book inside... It was retailing for $80. Looks to me like the people that have brought us the continued Meddler and Azimuth have added this to their stable... - DAve.
TOTAL ECLIPSE was conceived in 1993, well into Great Dane's ambitious "Pink Floyd Project." Great Dane had wanted to put out a box set that would appeal to the fans who had been terribly dissapointed with "Shine On," Pink Floyd's official release. It's purpose was to attempt to bring to the fans a comprehensive overview of the band's career, substituting rare material and alternative tracks wherever possible. This is the reason why many of the early singles and B-sides were included (which many people question). Much "Top Gear" material was also included because not only were the sound sources believed to be the better than on any previously released RoIO, but also because it seemed that these tracks should also be represented in the band's history. TOTAL ECLIPSE was meant to be chronological (although a few tracks are out of order) and comprehensive; something that could be listened to from beginning to end.
In retrospect, things probably could have been different. Originally TOTAL ECLIPSE was planned to be a 5 CD set, but Great Dane wanted to utilize it's 4 CD "Book" format, presenting 2 CD's on the insides of the front and back covers (this was the first of many Great Dane releases to be packaged in this manner), with an extensive booklet sandwiched between. Although the 5 CD set was ready to go into production (as far as the remastered DATS were concerned), remastering had to start all over again, and cuts had to be made.
In hindsight, the extensive "Nick's Boogie" could have been omited, making room for a few other early tracks, as well as some of the material from DSOTM ("Breath," "On The Run," and "The Great Gig In The Sky"), previously issued on other RoIO's. This might have left room for rare tracks such as "Main Theme From More," "Obscured By Clouds" and "When You're In," and the much requested "Childhood's End." The recent live singles an B-sides from 1987's DSOT tour, "Run Like Hell," and "Money," could also have made room for these rarities. Quality was also a major factor, this being the reason why certain desirable rarities were omitted. Perhaps the biggest regret was the omission of "Lucy Leave" and "King Bee", whose authenticity were still questionable at the time. It was not worth taking the risk of compromising the integrity of this release with a few possibly bogus recordings.
But the efforts put forth, warts and all, seemed to have paid off. Over three years later, it seems that the fans hold TOTAL ECLIPSE in very high regards, and that was my intention to begin with.
Unfortunately, once all of the material (remastered tapes, photos, text, and original artwork) were assembled and shipped to Italy, the production and manufacturing were out of my hands, Great Dane's releases got more elaborate, more ambitious, and certainly more professional over the years, so I'm glad that I wasn't asked to produce TOTAL ECLIPSE at the start of the great "Pink Floyd Project" (which was to release definitive CD's representing each of the band's major tours).
Not being RoLO's, these projects obviously had their limitations. I helped to produce these CD's not only to preserve the best of my audio collection on a (hopefully) longer lasting and more durable format, I wanted to present something that I would buy for myself. I also wanted to show respect for the fans, offering them something that had some thought behind it, making it worth their hard earned cash.
TOTAL ECLIPSE went through three pressings before Great Dane went under due to the Gat Treaty. The second pressing had two even columns on the back cover displaying the track listing. The image on the cover was also sharper and closer to the color of the original artwork. Almost ten thousand copies were produced and undoubtedly sold.
To address other issues stated in comments concerning this RoIO, the "barely readable articles" were included, not to be "read," but for "artistic" purposes only. For some unknown reason, "Murderistic Women" was omitted (although it was included in the liner notes), and "The Massed Gadgets..." was split into two tracks (although it plays out seamlessly). If any tracks seem speeded up or too slow, that is unfortunately the nature of some RoIO's, and the lack of sophisticated equipment (at the time) on my end to make those corrections.

To put it simply, the sound quality of the sound check party is great but the one of the concert is not that great.
Surrounded by a group of sea-lion whose brains must have been permanently damaged by the Beatles music could not help barking at the site of their life-long idol, it was extremely difficult to make an even decent recording at the show. Recording right next to this big guy who constantly made a series of unpleasant barking or moaning sounds, this recoding is not suitable to listen with headphones….We decided to let the uploader share this one because too many people asked him to do so….

5.Tom & Jerrys’ Memo:
To put it simply, the sound quality of the sound check party is great but the one of the concert is not that great.
Surrounded by a group of sea-lion whose brains must have been permanently damaged by the Beatles music could not help barking at the site of their life-long idol, it was extremely difficult to make an even decent recording at the show. Recording right next to this big guy who constantly made a series of unpleasant barking or moaning sounds, this recoding is not suitable to listen with headphones….We decided to let the uploader share this one because too many people asked him to do so….

Notes by the uploader:
Comprised here are all BBC sessions of Patto as collected by DIME member rhoudaille over several years. It has a few recordings missing but I wanted to leave his collection unaltered. By the way, this was rhoudaille's first upload here...a great way to start things!
Nothing on out of this collection has been used on commercial releases, and there are definitely no plans to release any of this material in the near future.
Following are rhoudaille's original notes, with updated links at the end:
I have compiled all the BBC recordings of PATTO that I have, which span over multiple sources,
so please excuse a clear "source" lineage.
There is a PATTO BBC Sessions bootleg, LIFE AFTER DEATH, which is basically included here;
however, I have better quality copies of some of those tracks so I decided to make this
compilation to present a chronological and best possible sounding collection of this rare material.
It is pretty complete too! Only 6 tracks missing... I know they're out there! Any one got 'em? Let us know! Additional information alongside the tracklisting.
