NOTES:

"Dallas/ b/w Sail the Waterway" (single) (Probe PRO 562) 1972 - This came from Demonoid, last year. I don't know who the uploader was. Thanks very much!

The first Steely Dan single was released in 1972, earlier the same year as their debut album. It contained 2 non-LP songs: "Dallas" as its A-side and "Sail The Waterway" as its B-side. The songs are easy to identify as Steely Dan works. Not all of the essential ingredients were together yet; both songs are just a notch or two above demo quality. Still, these are two reasonably appealing songs that gave a good hint as to what was ahead. In 1978, both songs were included (along with "Do It Again" and "Haitian Divorce") on the four-song EP Plus Fours (ABC Records ABE 12003).

In 1972, ABC sent out promotional copies of Steely Dan's first single, "Dallas" backed with "Sail the Waterway." It is unclear if "stock" copies were ever released to the general public, and if they were, the single sold so poorly that promotional copies are more abundant today (whereas the reverse is true for most releases). Neither song has ever been included on a compilation or album of any kind, or re-released in any form, with few exceptions: a 12" European EP titled "Plus Fours" - this 1978 EP features "Dallas," "Sail the Waterway," "Do It Again," and "Haitian Divorce." "The Probe Family Sampler" - released by Music for Pleasure in the UK - included "Dallas."

  1. In the Glendale/San Diego 9 March 1974 files there is an extra final track 'Pretzel Logic' which is not included in the tack listing. It's a different version to the 10 March one and the only other mention of 'PL' from 9 March is on the abridged bootleg 'Goldrush' (pictured). Anyway even with this extra track the 2 shows can fit onto a single cdr. The Record Plant 1974 plus Don Kirchner fit onto another cdr and the studio tracks (early single plus Katy Lied and Royal Scam outtakes fit onto a last cdr. Great download, thanks very much.
