More from the outlaw country archives before returning to my audience master recordings. This one came out of Willie's camp and was recorded for possible release as "Willie and Family Live Volume 2" but was shelved.

Not sure what got into Willie on this night, maybe recordign for a possible live release but this is an amazingly long show at two and a half hours and 53 songs!

An A+ recording with the only flaw being some slight echo back in the mics from the apparently cavernous arena they were playing.

comments:
this was when they were playing mostly music from their 1st release, "Parachutes", but starting to throw in a few from the second, "a rush of blood to the head". Avalon is a disco, and this was for most, the only chance for Bostonians to get up close and personal with Coldplay, since after this they became America's new favorite British darlings. Chris remarks that they are not a new band, but that this was probably the first time Boston had seen Coldplay and they hoped they would be back. They didn't know if they would be yet, but the answer came swiftly soon after, since they did come back to much larger venues all over the world and won several of music awards.
Parachutes even got a Grammy award for best alternative album, and it's a nice one, but far too popular now to call it "alternative". Coldplay released a DVD and CD set from Sydney, Australia's 2003 show, which is a good one.

I think that this is the first VOIO version of this show on the Net. I bought the original Japanese release and decided to “liberate” it and share. Excellent audio, different camera mix (it purport to be screen shots), although the picture is rather grainy, particularly at the darker parts, also sometime the frames are somewhat off-center – but let’s don’t quibble. Overall, an enjoyable experience.

Don’t get too excited, folks -- this is not a great recording of the first date of the Stones’ “Zip Code” tour. At best, it’s a surprisingly decent capture considering where it was taped from -- far, far on right field up in the nosebleeds, fairly in line with the hard-right speaker stack but pretty distant and full of echo off the back half of the stadium. But for some reason, no other tapes of this show have surfaced thus far, and I’m hoping maybe putting this out there will help shake the tree a little bit. It seems unlikely mine was the only tape running in that entire, immense space, and surely somebody was recording from a better location.

But if by some wild chance this is all we have, it’s better to have it than not to -- the show was very strong, light on setlist surprises in the second half but superbly-played as always and full of tremendous work by Jagger and Wood in particular. The quieter numbers are the finest here, I think: “Moonlight Mile” is breathtaking, and sounded especially good with Mick’s ghostly echo reverberating through the stadium, while any chance to hear Keith sing “Slipping Away” is to be cherished. As for the more uptempo stuff, “All Down The Line” and “Street Fighting Man” and “Midnight Rambler” are mighty -- and good heavens has Ronnie ever risen to the challenge of playing Mick Taylor’s parts on “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking”! It was a bit disappointing, to be sure, that we only got half of “Sticky Fingers,” but I’m not sure “Sister Morphine,” say, would have worked in a stadium anyway.

Obviously, if you have a better tape, please share it. As for this one, do with it what you like -- convert it, remaster it, trade it, post it. Once you’ve downloaded it, it belongs to you. Maybe refrain from selling it, just because that would be incredibly uncool, but then again if you can find somebody foolish enough to pay for something that sounds like this, maybe I ought to encourage you to take advantage. All that matters is, support the Stones, and maybe more importantly live music in general, and tell your friends if they’re on the fence about seeing these guys this summer that they still sound amazing and put on a great night’s entertainment. Buy records, go to concerts, pick up t-shirts from bands that support themselves that way, and generally do all the things I probably don’t have to encourage you to do, since you’re all good music fans anyway. But enjoy this, and everybody who’s seeing “Zip Code” this summer, please tape and share!

ONT Notes-
I hadn’t seen Bonnie since 2002, at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. She’s as good as ever and is definitely one of my all time favorite slide guitar players. The weather in Avila Beach was beautiful, with a slight breeze in the air. The wool cap makes for a good windscreen, but there were occasional gusts that can be heard. The Blues Festival is at the Avila Beach Resort Golf Course, and is right next to the ocean. It’s really a beautiful setting. At one point Bonnie remarked, I can’t believe there are whales right over there. Have they gone yet?.’ (I saw/recorded Bonnie the last time she played in Avila Beach, in 1996 for the Walter Capps For Congress Benefit with Jackson Browne, Don Henley, And John Trudell.) I got my ticket to the festival at the last minute, as there are three people who are higher in the pecking order. Fortunately for me, not for them, two couldn’t make it. One was in the hospital with a kidney stone and one was home with a bad back. I had to scrounge for 9 volts before I left the house, not having time to stop to buy new ones, and ended up using previously used batteries from other recordings. I noticed that, a little over 30 minutes into the Bonnie set, the red light on the MV-100 preamp was on, indicating low voltage. I made a battery swap between songs, and fortunately no music was lost, just a bit of on-stage dialog.

John Wilson says: “Mastertapes looks at the nuts and bolts of songwriting, and draws back the curtain on what can often be a private and sometimes lonely art. Having interviewed McCartney many times before, I know he offers great insight into that process. As the most successful songwriter of all time, and the man behind some of my favourite music, I couldn’t ask for a better guest – it’s going to be a very special session.”

The legendary songwriter popped past the BBC's Maida Vale's studios on May 11th, joined by an extremely small audience.

Lucky competition winners were able to watch Paul McCartney wax lyrical, joined by the likes of Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, and Brad Pitt – who came straight off set to watch the show being filmed.

It's a remarkably honest interview. Looking back on his lengthy career Paul McCartney reflected on some fond, and not so fond, memories, including stints working with George Martin, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and, of course, John Lennon.

15 second snippets of songs, otherwise live played material by Paul.

Tapers Notes:
There was a lot of traffic on the way to the gig, so I missed the first few songs. Security was really tight, so I only recorded this show using the internal mike from my cell phone.
I had cord issues, so the first couple tracks have static. I went with friends and their hoots and hollars and talking aren't too bad. I was drinking and had to take a rest break, so one track in the middle is missing. My batteries went bad towards the end of the show, so the encore is missing. Actually, none of that happened, because I've been taping since the 1970s and know what I'm doing.

Seriously, Eric Clapton at the Royal Albert Hall with a ridiculous tight back up band. Who could resist. Not a lot of talkers and yellers made this as good a pull as there can be given the enthusiastic crowd. Recorder switched to a Tascam DR2d for this show and better ALD placement made this a better recording on this second night.

07. The crystal ship
08. Wake up
09. Light my fire
10. The end

Though labeled an audience recording, this was in fact recorded through the school's PA system by a faculty member. The sound quality, however, is comparable to a very good audience recording. Unlike bootleg releases of this show, this tape has no cuts during "Break On Through" and contains Jim Morrison's complete introduction to "The End."

05. The end (cut)

Nice low generation copy of this show. The end of "Back Door Man" is cut as is the beginning of "The End." For years, there was uncertainty as to the actual date of this performance. Collectors originally listed it as November 19, 1967 and then later as July 9, 1967. The date has finally been confirmed as November 3, 1967 after a fan recently discovered an old newspaper ad for the show. Another mystery solved!

01. House announcer / When the music's over
02. Horse latitudes
03. Break on through (to the other side)
04. Alabama song (Whisky bar)
05. Light my fire

Problems with the PA system force The Doors to end this show early despite Jim Morrison's claim to the audience that they would be right back. The actual date and venue for this recording are uncertain. It does seem likely that it was taped in the summer of 1967 rather than in December. Some believe this show may be from the Kaiser Dome on July 4, 1967 as it was a venue on the same grounds as the larger Swing Auditorium; however, reviews of that show do not mention any PA problems and all say The Doors put on a great show. This tape simply does not match those reviews. While not conclusive, I'm hesitant to relabel this show at this time.

The Doors were on the bill with Otis Redding for these December shows at the Winterland. Sadly, Redding was killed in a plane crash only two weeks before they happened. During "When The Music's Over," Jim Morrison debuts his "Poor Otis" lyric which will later be used as the introduction to the song "Runnin' Blue."

A rare alternate source recording that includes an uncut version of "Who Do You Love" and a longer version of "Light My Fire" (almost 9 minutes). Unfortunately, this source contains cut versions of other songs (it's also missing "Wake Up") and is slightly worse quality than the first source. The opening track features the tapers discussing how to work the recording device.
