The Gymnasium soundboard tape(s)::
First track to surface from the Gymnasium tape(s) was Guess I'm Falling In Love (supposedly listed as Fever In My Pocket on the original tape box), broadcasted on WPIX FM by John Cale on June 3, 1979. After playing this version he clearly states that it is from a tape he stumbled across. He definitely says "Gymnasium, April 1967". Cale also said in some interviews he owns the tape of the entire Gymnasium show, including Walk It As You Talk It with a really good guitar sound.

Two others tracks surfaced in the 90s - Booker T. orginally appeared on the John Cale Paris S'Eveille CDEP in 1991 and was reissued (unfortunately with 8 seconds amputed at the beginning) on the Peel Slowly And See box set, along with an alternate version of Guess I'm Falling In Love. This version sounds clearly different as compared with the WPIX version and has some lyrics differences (the box set version begins with "I got fever..." while the 'old' version begins with "I got MY fever...").

Booker T. (6:38)

More material from the Gymnasium recordings is finally issued in February 2008 on the bootleg LP Live At The Gymnasium. According to a source claiming to have a DAT copy of the original tape, it has an additional instrumental version of The Gift (possibly the version of Booker T. released on the PSAS box set?) after Sister Ray.

Covers: Very closely resembles the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab's Original Master Recordings series of CD's with gold horizonal stripes running across the cover against a black background. Large gold stripe at the top reading "ORIGINAL MASTER SERIES" in the same font used by MFSL. In the center is a color drawing of a jow in the middle of a white road eating off the ground. In a light green colored sky are purple clouds, with "Pink Floyd" written at the top in white with INTERSTELLAR ENCORE" below it in black caps about half the size of the PF. Above the picture is a small blue stripe, again reading "ORIGINAL MASTER SERIES." The back is black with the track listings on the right, along side of a yellow poster for the concert on the left.

*Comments:* Finally the full set of encores of this concert are available on CD! Previously to my knowledge only ASoS was available, albeit in a truncated form. This 2 CD set has the full concert including the 2nd Encore with a fantastic version of IO. The SQ is fantastic, definitely soundboard as Dave and Rog sound crisp and clear as if right
in front of the mics.
A slight hiss can be heard in the right channel on the first disc, but the second disc is flawless. No hiss at all can be heard during the quiet parts. It could have been recorded last week in a studio it sounds that good! That being said, there are some very, very brief "bumps" in the music at various parts, but it's obviously due to the condition of the master, but definitely nothing at all to complain about.
Other comments on the concert itself can be found on the Live at Winterland page. They all apply, as (duh!) it's the same show.
As far as the discs themselves:
All inserts are on thick glossy card stock.
The labels on the discs are directly screened on them.
The playing surfaces on the discs are gold (the disc tops say "24K Gold"), but the color resembles the old formulation on Kodak CD-R's rather than the color on legitimate Mobile Fidelity releases (the style of which this RoIO tries to emulate). However, whether or not the CD's might actually be CD-R's is pure conjecture on my part. There doesn't seem to be any indication on the CD's (no matrix numbers in the burst cut area) that they are CD-R's. -JAY-C
It's an almost perfect quality soundboard of the april 29, 1970 fillmore west evening show. I bought it thinking it would be the KQED tv broadcast but was pleasantly shocked when it turned out to be this. As far as I know this tape has not been in collecting circles before. Needless to say this recording is a must have for all fans. -JAMIE
On the back, it says "So you thought you had heard this show before? Never Like this! For the first time we bring you a complete stereo soundboard recording of this show that has often been confused with their appearance at the KQED studios earlier in the day. (See Insert). Unfortunately, as I got this on CD-R, the insert didn't have any information as to the nature of this. However, it appears to fit the exact description of the "Breast Milky" ROIO, but it has Interstellar Overdrive in place of the June '69 material.
Before Interstellar, Roger says "If any of you have been listening to us since we were all teenagers, this is a track off our first album that we've been doing ever since we started and it's called Interstellar Overdrive."
I think the sound quality may be better than on "Breat Milky" (but I haven't heard that one, so I don't really know) because the sound quality is quite good. Maybe I just have lower standards. -STR
Back cover promises "stereo soundboard recording", and it appears to be just that. Audience is exceptionally quiet (one of Waters' deeply romanticised nights of "magical connection" no doubt. At the end, when Waters tells the audience "how nice it's been to play here", he sounds sincere.

06 - Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun
“The cheerful freaks who floated over stange fumes during the concerts of Pink Floyd's tour " Ummagumma " in 1969/70 had the privilege to see and hear the Graal, the electrical version of "Atom heart mother", never recorded under this form, as it was, from July, 1970 and the concert of Hyde Park, mixed with an arrangement of cords and brass orchestra which killed in the egg all its rocky lightnings. Since then, the fevered quest did not stop of filmed clips, bootleg albums, then at the age of the net, fragments of concerts with a more or less good quality in Florida or in Japan, of a show in BBC or a concert in Saint Tropez. And miracle, the without-public concert done for QKED was recorded with high video and audio quality, and reappeared recently.
In a studio without public, on April 29th, 1970, Pink Floyd on stage play a show where in an hour, alternately acoustical or electrical. They are going to build a mosaic of their three albums an hour, " Ummagumma ", "More" and "Atom heart mother".
It opens with " the thing ", 19 minutes of "ATM", its topic, its guitar riff, its cosmic ravings and final. "Cymbaline" and "Grantchester meadows" follow, and electricity again with "Green is the colour" chained with a furious "Careful with that axe Eugene" to finish in a languid way with "Set the controls for the heart of the sun".
The sound is very good, perfectly restored (from the 3/4" original master) and pictures come from a rebroadcast of the show in August, 1981. The film starts and ends with pictures of in-flight fields taken in low flying, with hyper-saturated colours, a bit "forced " but as a result well-deserved psychedelic style.
For those for whom true Pink Floyd is that former "Dark side of the moon", this concert will be the object to be cherished, so much the concerts of this tour were artistic and emotional peaks of the band. Each of four members is on his place, but with all his place, necessary piece of an enchanting jigsaw puzzle.

KQED (HRV DVD 001 RevA)
KQED TV Studios
Video Lineage: 1982 KQED Rebroadcast > VHS > AVI > MPEG-2 (CBR 8Mbps)

Format: NTSC/PCM Mono
Running Time: Approx. 60 mins

02 - Cymbaline
03 - Grantchester Meadows
04 - Green Is The Color
05 - Careful With That Axe, Eugene
06 - Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun
We decided to do a RevA of our 1st DVD release because we felt that, after much research, an audio upgrade was warranted. The video is exactly the same as our initial release. No re-encoding was applied. The video from the 3/4" U-Matic tape became unstable over time, resulting in a slightly jittery image while the audio was still solid. The audio from our initial DVD also came from this source but this was in the early days of HRV and while Mr Phloyd did a great job with the video, the compressed AC3 audio didn't really live up to its potential. We only recently looked into our original source after several FM (or VPro) recordings surfaced on Yeeshkul.
Some notes from MOB:
We had 2 sources to choose from: one source from a U-Matic TV station master, the other source from a mysterious FM broadcast. The FM source was said to be in stereo, but a quick analysis clearly shows there is absolutely no stereo separation on the instruments. Further analysis of the FM source reveals that the fake stereo effect is mainly due to multiple analog generations and fluctuations in the tape channels stretching. The fact is that the original recording was done in mono, and that there's no evidence of any true stereo mix of that performance. The FM source has also the typical alterations from FM processing (levelling and limiting), and is riddled with pops and crackles, not even mentioning a 1.7% deviation from the real speed.
On the other hand, the U-Matic source has the original mono recording with a very stable and correct speed, along with excellent spectral characteristics (as you could expect from a station master). A close comparison between the 2 sources shows some evidence of the "pureness" (in terms of sound fidelity) of the U-Matic tape compared with the multiple analog gens of the other source. It is not easy to describe it with words, let's just say that if you listen to the cymbals sound during some quiet parts, you hear "dziing" on the U-Matic source, while it's "tching" on the FM source… ;-)
Therefore, the remastering work was performed on the U-Matic source. It consisted in the following main activities: adjust the levels and EQ in order to bring clarity to the raw recording, get rid of the annoying low frequency hum that is present most of the time, and manually clean all the little imperfections of the raw transfer (mainly pops and drop-outs).
It has to be noted that, while Atom Heart Mother, Cymbaline, Green Is The Colour and Careful With That Axe Eugene were rather well recorded by the KQED sound engineers, it was much more difficult to get a good sound for Grantchester Meadows and Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun. These two tracks seem to have been captured differently by the KQED engineers and there were some bad sounding sections difficult to correct or improve (on every source we heard, these two songs are always with inferior sound quality than the four others). A possible explanation could be the specific instruments settings: acoustic guitars and vocals for Grantchester Meadows, and a lot of middle frequencies (gong, toms, lack of bass) for Set The Controls. Too bad KQED staff was not able to do a better job when recording and mixing these two tracks. (Ed: Perhaps these to tracks were recorded 1st and then adjustments/corrections were made?).

This version builds on my August, 2002, remix, which has never circulated. The recording has been equalized to make the bass much louder. Treble frequencies have been reduced to help balance the overall sound and make hiss less apparent. Light dynamic compression was used to improve the mix of vocals with instruments. The original recording runs fast and the pitch of the music is a bit sharp, so pitch was altered by -25 cents in the remaster to bring it to proper pitch. Track boundaries were adjusted from the original CD so that the music starts much closer to the beginning of each track. Several seconds of loud hum was reduced in track 14. The separate track for band introductions was merged with the preceding track (track 8, "Pretzel Logic"), while the excerpt of "Your Gold Teeth" was broken out as a separate track.

(Billy says during the song, I sure hope I can hear somebody say get down tonight, cause I am gonna tear this guitar up! And the crowd screams GET DOWN!) .. A very bizarre and awesome version where Billy really does tear it up hard. Includes an extra version of a guitar solo and Billy says "That wasn't in the record, just something special for tonight." Also includes a short sermon about being treated bad by your old lady or your old man. And "I don't care if you're a lowdown hillbilly from Texas or a lowdown hillbilly from Alabama".
18) Rattlesnake Shake (Long extended version, unbelievable!)
19) La Grange
20) La Grange Part II
21) Sloppy Drunk
22) BBQ
Encore:
Billy says "Ya'll about ready for the second set to start?"
23) Mexican Blackbird (Vocals by Billy)
24) El Diablo
25) Goin' Down To Mexico
26) Tush
27) Backdoor Love Affair
28) Mellow Down Easy
29) Backdoor Love Affair Part 2
30) Long Distance Boogy (Alabama lyrics)
The show is ended with both Billy and Dusty yelling "Boogie Train" not once, but twice, then a final single verse jam and the crowd goes insane as they exit.

Note:
Before Black celebation you can hear a guy say "jetzt fängts an" (now the show begins), probably not his first show of the tour. At least one other source was shared on Dime before. The old source is a bit muffled and comes from a higher gen tape or an inferior tape transfer and misses "Photographic".
A lot of cuts all over the recording, many cuts in BC removed and speed raised (+3%).
Sound slightly improves on side 2 of the tape. Still not the best sounding tape from this series but a nice upgrade to the previous version.

About the date: Joe Pass wears different suits on the solo and the trio tunes, so I guess this must be from to separate dates, one being a day before or after April 30. It's the same venue, so this is probably all from the Jazzfest Wien. Anyone knows the exact dates?
