Bruce and band perform a 24-song set at Rock in Rio Festival, only the second time Springsteen has played in Portugal. Bruce didn't take to the stage until after midnight on the morning of June 4, and it was nearly 2.45am before he was finally done. Set closes with the tour debut of "Twist and Shout," the first time this year a show hasn't ended with "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out". Fireworks started when he finished "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" as a form of closing the Festival. But Bruce didn't care and neither did the 81,000 people attending this show who have been waiting 19 years for his comeback. "She's The One", "I'm On Fire", and "Hungry Heart" are played by sign request. First ever performances in Portugal of "We Take Care Of Our Own", "Wrecking Ball", "Death To My Hometown", "My City Of Ruins", "Spirit In The Night", "No Surrender", "She's The One", "I'm On Fire", "Shackled And Drawn", "Waitin' On A Sunny Day",
"The Rising", "Lonesome Day", "We Are Alive", "Dancing In The Dark", "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out", and "Twist And Shout". Patti Scialfa is not present.

Some two hours of high definition pro-shot footage circulates, comprised of nineteen songs. The video begins with "Spirit In The Night" and is missing the first six tracks. The first verse of "Waitin' On A Sunny Day" is cut.

06. I Still Haven't Found What I`m Looking For / Stand By Me
07. Desire
08. With Or Without You
09. Love Is Blindness

Note:
This is a soundboard recording, with a pretty good mix, you can hear Bono breathe at times. It is slightly pushing the high frequency distortion level at times, but not so that it takes much away from your listening pleasure. The audience level is very soft, which makes for a strange but interesting effect. 'Dancing Queen' is played as well as a stunning cover of 'Stand By Me'. Good performance from U2. I recommend this to anyone looking for a good ZooTV concert.

Notes:
a wealth of 1964-1968 footage of the band, even including a couple of live 1964 clips (of "Louise" and "I Wish You Would") with the Eric Clapton lineup. Some of the scenes with the Jeff Beck lineup are terrifically exciting live performances, particularly their Shindig versions of "For Your Love," "Heart Full of Soul," and a wild "I'm a Man." The less widely circulated 1966 NME Poll Winners Concert shows them with Beck doing strong live versions of "Train Kept A-Rollin'" and "Shapes of Things," and a 1967 German TV clip has the Jimmy Page lineup on "Shapes of Things," "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" (though Page can't quite simulate all the psychedelic sounds of the instrumental break), "Over Under Sideways Down," and (oddly, not listed on the cover) an extended "I'm a Man." The biggest kick of all is reserved for a 1968 French television appearance that had the Page lineup present "Dazed and Confused" -- the same song more famously recorded slightly later by Led Zeppelin, and which the Yardbirds never released an official version of while active. As a bonus, there's also a German Beat Club performance by Renaissance, the band singer Keith Relf and drummer Jim McCarty formed after the Yardbirds Broke up good luck guitar sam in kansas city

Here is another very nice compilation of vintage performances. Got this on HungerCity long time ago, thanks Kindly note this was publicly broadcasted in the US back then, so there is absolutely no nudity in this show. This was an hour-long show that ran on network TV (!)from July 1968 to May 1970. The ever hip and debonair Hef surrounded himself with a bunch of attractive young pseudo-sophisticates, salted each week with a variety of personalities ranging from Milton Berle to Mort Sahl, Sid Caesar to Lenny Bruce, Roman Polanski (and Sharon Tate) to Paul Mazursky. There was also some amazing music.

Here's a description of the show by Chris Rywalt:
"The camera moved lazily across a room where a party was going on. A party unlike any party I had ever seen, on film or otherwise. People chatted in small groups. Everyone had a drink in their hand. Blacks and whites mingled freely. Almost everyone was smoking. Quiet jazz filled the room. Everyone was dressed stylishly and with care. Everyone looked attractive in a comfortable way. No one looked like a model -- the guests all just looked like handsome, pleasant people. The light was soft, yellowish, and diffuse.

"The camera wandered past the guests, stopping here and there and catching fragments of their conversation. The camera rolled along very slowly. Amazingly slowly. [snip]

"Later in the show, the camera panned along and encountered a band. They were playing jazz. Gradually, as the camera didn't move, it became apparent that this was a featured band, performing for the show.

"And all of After Dark was like this. Long, languorous camera shots, lingering on details, while an incredibly civilized party went on, with everyone drinking and smoking and grooving to the music. And occasionally one of the guests would turn out to be someone with a talent, who would graciously agree to share some of it with us."

* Saw Rory four or five times over the years and it was always great! This is an excellent recording. Hope you enjoy!

These are two BBC recordings captured at the Paris Theatre in London. The first set has tracks 1 to 6 and is from August 1971, and the second with tracks 7 to 13 is from January 1972.
The DJ introduces each track and Rory as we would expect plays wonderfully both the electric and the acoustic stuff (on 2 tracks).

Geetarz Comments:
The typical Mid Valley quality touch is obvious in this reissue of the earlier set, and is not to be confused with the earlier (1999) release of the same name on the Empress Valley label, which was available in 3CD and "4 Gold CD Limited Edition" versions.

Now, on to the goods ...
We begin with the epic October 16 performance from Philadelphia, which has been remastered by Mid Valley.
This is a legendary Dominos show, and a personal favorite. Some older reference guides inexplicably refer to this as a soundboard, but it's clearly a marginal to average recording.
Luckily a fantastic performance makes up for any drawbacks of the source material.
"Ramblin" features some of EC's best ever slide playing. EC can at times play slide a little too precisely - but in this performance, he exhibits loopy, "out of the box" playing that clearly shows Duane Allman's influence as he dances around all the notes. I don't recall EC performing "Ramblin'" in this arrangement again, which alone makes it unique.
This performance is also notable for an incredible, mind bending, tour-de-force performance of "Why does Love...", which is, in my Not-So-Humble opinion, not only the finest performance of this song of all time, but has to be one of EC's top performances of any song, ever. If I were making a list of the "Top 25 songs EC ever played" or something like that, this song would be on that list.
And it's not just EC here. If you listen to some of the very early gigs, the band were a little loose, but here they play as a single organism, rising and falling, playing off each other for all they are worth. "Why Does..." has always had a demanding and unusual bass line, and Radle holds it down, driving the song in the same way that Entwhistle would actually drive the rhythm of The Who as Moon, or in this case Jim Gordon, lays out some 15+ minutes of drum madness, and Bobby Whitlock holding it all together with a shimmering B3 and his incredible vocals.
This performance of this song is indeed "epic", and unforgettable.
This show also features the first-ever live performance of "Motherless Children", albeit in raw form, which in a way adds to its charm.
Now, with that aside ... how does it sound? This one is up to personal preference. Sometimes Mid Valley goes a little over the top, but I quite like this version, and, depending on your listening circumstance, you may prefer it. It's a definite change from the original, and I think that in the end it will come down to not only your personal preferences, but the volume at which you listen and how you listen (speakers, PC speakers, headphones, cheap stereo, car stereo, boom box, etc.).
Onto the Santa Monica show ... as with the earlier Philadelphia show, it's time to talk about a few of the MANY releases of this particular performance.
Perhaps the earliest were vinyl ROIO, and of course numerous traded cassette copies of uncertain parentage, and subsequent CD release "Stormy Monday" on the Trademark of Quality (TMoQ) label. Those, and the later, "Live at Santa Monica" are incomplete, as they only feature only one of the two performances that day.
This Mid Valley release of "The Majestic Stand" (Mid Valley 068-071) is subtly remastered, and from that point on it's up to personal preference which version a listener will prefer, the Mid Valley or the version on the Paddington label version (PADD 040/041/042).
The Mid Valley version is a little warmer and darker, the Paddington trades off being a bit brighter for a little more overall volume and hiss.
In the end, I'd suggest that you check out both the MV and Paddington versions, and choose which is *your* personal preference.
