It is an excellent PRO Shot video of Elvis and the Attractions in 1980. There are not many PRO Shot Elvis Costello and the Attraction shows currently in circulation so this is a special treat. Be patient for the first 45 seconds until the sound corrects itself. Then sit back and enjoy the show. One very interesting song is Elvis' cover of the Temptations' "Don't Look Back". The second part of the video is Elvis appearing on the Tom Snyder show. The quality of that footage isn't great but it's interesting to watch.

Jimi Hendrix - 1970-05-02 - Madison, WI (AUD/FLAC)

(Audience FLAC)

Jimi Hendrix
Dane County Coliseum
Madison, Wisconsin
May 2, 1970
[Funkydrummer Stereo Merge and Cleanup]

1st and 3rd source with some 2nd source to patch as necessary.

01 - Intro [1st and 2nd Source Merge]
02 - Fire [2nd Source and 3rd Source (halfway in)]
03 - Room Full Of Mirrors
04 - Hear My Train A Comin'
05 - Lover Man [1st and 2nd Source Merge]
06 - Red House
07 - Message To Love
08 - Ezy Rider
09 - Machine Gun
10 - Star Spangled Banner
11 - Foxy Lady
12 - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
13 - Purple Haze

Notes: The quality here is fantastic for a 1970 audience recording. Two decent sources of this show circulated for decades, each complementing each other. A few years back a third source popped up that is brilliant quality for the time. It caputures all the instruments clearly, including Cox's heavy bass. It's loud and upfront, and while a bit unbalanced at times, it's vibrant and gives you an idea of Hendrix's live sound in 1970 if you were out in the audience.

Funkydrummer on CTT took all three sources and worked his magic. Just before Hendrix's first solo during "Fire" the high quality sound kicks in and stays for most of the gig, sans "Lover Man," which the third source did not capture.

Brilliant show from Mr. Hendrix on this night. His spirits are good, really connecting with the audience and his playing is phenomenal. Some funny moments...the fan freaking out as "Fire" starts "Oh wow!!!" ... after "Hear My Train" someone yells "what can we give you?" Hendrix slyly replies "a joint" and a few seconds later several fly on to the stage. After "Red House," as Hendrix tunes up, he makes a golf(!) reference. "You have a 3-inch putt and you miss it" referencing the effort to tune up and make it just right, only to have things go awry. He also references Cambodia before "Machine Gun" where he U.S. suddenly had military operations at the time of this gig.

Some slight oddities on this night...while Hendrix never had a standard setlist, going from the Stars Spangled Banner into Foxy Lady was a rarity...as was Voodoo Child into Purple Haze, the latter's intro notes played in staccato fashion instead of more of the gliding start generally heard on live 1970 versions.

Anyway, thanks to Funkydrummer and his approval to seed this show over here on DIME. Enjoy Jimi and co. as they were on this night in 1970, captured by fans like us...good work lads!!!

Comments:
Here is our capture of Joe Walsh from the "One Hellava Night" Tour with Bad Co., and an acoustic guitar-singer (Steve Rogers, without his band), both opening for Joe. We were in the 2nd row of sec. 236 (dead center to the stage). The sound mix was very good, the LA area crowd was pretty well behaved and the recording came out well. Joe appeared to enjoy himself this cool and breezy full-moon friday evening. Note, Ringo sat in on Drums for the first encore, RMW!

notes
This is one show of Cream's that has never been done justice til now. It's wandered around in bits and pieces in awful sound quality. The friendly folks at Mid Valley have now gotten their hands on a complete tape and applied that Mid Valley magic. The sound quality still isn't great but is a vast improvement over every release I've ever heard.

(presumably there may have been a "so lonely" encore, but it is not included in this recording. maybe not too, since the last 2 tracks are encores.)

runtime: 81:01 (minutes/seconds)

notes
it's most of a high energy show. there is some crowd obstruction and loud clapping in a few parts but most of it sounds pretty good. a section of walking on the moon is missing but spliced, so it's probably not even noticable. Sting mentions playing there a few months earlier and screws up the lyrics near the end of Roxanne. overall it was a good performance though. recording was said to be made on a boom box type recorder.

SOURCE 1: FM recording, seven flac files with txt and md5, previously seeded here January '14 by fbauer. I was considering constructing a matrix of this and source 2, but frankly, the audio on this one is warbly and saturated, and source 2, even for an aud recording, is a significant improvement in fidelity. This may just be a more degenerated (but also more complete) tape copy of source 2. So I used this to patch in missing segments (e.g. starts of tracks 1+2, ends of tracks 2+5)

SOURCE 2: Private 1st gen aud source, 3 flac files with txt. Needed work on track splits and transitions. Otherwise near-perfect sound.

This^ is the (un)official Can live guide. By re-sharing and supporting these upgrades we continue the legacy of the music, and help encourage others to (re) discover it. By spreading the word about cited concert recordings that have yet to surface, ESPECIALLY IF you live in Germany, France or Britain, WE CAN make more appear.

In November 1988, Randy Newman recorded his album Land of dreams on which Mark Knopfler played on several tracks. As a promotion for the album, Randy and Mark appeared in various shows and played some tracks. Some rare recordings and rarely performed songs. Very interesting interview, mainly with Randy Newman but also with Mark Knopfler.

Description
Ustad Vilayat Khan was a contemporary and a great rival of Pandit Ravi Shankar and arguably one of the greatest sitar players of all time. He tragically passed away in March of 2004 at the age of 76. He has many recordings on various labels including India Archive Music and Navras. My favorite recording of his is Darbari Kannada recorded back in the 60s (recently re-released on CD) - it set the standard for all sitarists who followed on how to play this raga. His son Shujat Khan tours the USA regularly and is a very gifted sitarist in his own right. FYI, a good place for Indian CDs is www.shrimatis.com, the best selection and prices I have come across. www.khazana.com is another good place.

Concert recordings of his are hard to come by because Khan sahib disliked being recorded. This was a stealth recording from the soundboard done on to reel-to-reel. Mine is low gen cassette copy from the master. This is a very early and rare recording and Khan sahib is in top form.

SBD -> reel to reel -> cassette -> Sound Forge -> CD-R -> EAC -> FLAC 8 w/align on sector boundaries

Edit Notes:
Because Indian music involves a lot of tuning and the pieces are each very long, I edit so that only the music remains in order to allow the music to fit on a CD.
