06 - Femme Fatale (2:36)
07 - Venus In Furs (4:29)
08 - I'm Waiting For The Man (4:10)
09 - Run Run Run (4:23)

Total running time: 42m 03s

The bulk of the songs that would become The Velvet Underground & Nico were recorded in mid-April, 1966, during a four-day stint at Scepter Studios, a decrepit recording studio in New York City. This recording session was financed by Warhol and Columbia Records' sales executive Norman Dolph, who also acted as an engineer with John Licata. Though exact total cost of the project is unknown, estimates vary from $1500 to $3000

Actual recording at Scepter was done rather quickly in about two business days (roughly 8-10 hours) while the third was spent listening to the material and the fourth was spent mixing. Soon after, Dolph sent an acetate disc of the recordings to Columbia in an attempt to interest them in distributing the album, but they declined, as did Atlantic Records and Elektra Records. Eventually, the MGM Records-owned Verve Records accepted the recordings with the help of Verve staff producer Tom Wilson, who had recently moved from a job at Columbia.

Scepter Studios acetate version
Norman Dolph's original acetate pressing of the Scepter Studios material contains several recordings that would make it onto the final album, though many are different mixes of those recordings and three are different takes entirely.

The acetate was pressed on April 25, 1966, shortly after the recording sessions. It would resurface decades later when it was bought by collector Warren Hill of Montreal, Canada in September 2002 at a flea market in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City for $0.75. Hill put the album up for auction on eBay in November. On December 8, 2006, a winning bid for $155,401 was placed, but not honored. The album was again placed for auction on eBay and was successfully sold on December 16, 2006 for $25,200.

It is important to note that ten songs were recorded during the Scepter sessions and only nine appear on the acetate cut. Dolph recalls "There She Goes Again" being the missing song (and, indeed, the version of "There She Goes Again" that appears on the final LP is attributed to the Scepter Studios session).
Though rumors have circulated concerning an eventual official release of this version of the album, this has yet to be confirmed or announced by any major record label.
However, a ripped version of the acetate began circulating the internet in January 2007. Bootleg versions of the acetate tracks have also become available on vinyl and CD

A (former) buddy of mine recorded this show while a member of the VH crew.

WOODA remastered it...along with a handful of other early gigs...not the least of which is the now-infamous
NIGHTMARE BEFORE HALLOWEEN. With the much-deserved success of Greg Renoff's literary and historic masterpiece

VAN HALEN RISING...I thought it would be a good time to bring some of these early shows to surface.

Among the highlights of this show...

I should point out that the boys are introduced by legendary KROQ DJ Rodney Bingenheimer

SHOW YOUR LOVE is, of course, I'M THE ONE.

I LIVE WITH FOOLS, later FOOLS, features the origin of Dave's "THE STORY OF JOE"...which became a regular part of the 1979 tour.

it is clearly one of the top recordings of the tour with the hiss taken out. I spent a long time aiming for the most precise application of the noise reduction that I could, there is some slight artifacting you can hear on headphones when things are quiet but other than that it shouldn't be noticable. No other treatments were made. There are noticable differences in arrangement in many songs compared to the European leg. Furtermore Sylvian seems to be in a rather improvisatory mood as he takes more liberties than usual with rhythm and melody on vocals.

Audio source and quality: Audience, excellent quality. I've improved the audio even further from the original, although that sounded great already. Minor audio fluctuations here and there but no problems for the most part.

Special features: Due to Rob's accident, Hell Bent for Leather is played instrumentally for so far the only time in history.

This show is historical in two ways; first, it was the last show the band played for almost seven years, and the last Judas Priest show with Rob Halford until the 2004 Reunion TOUR. Secondly, it was at this show where Rob had his famous motorcycle accident which knocked him out for the duration of opening number Hell Bent for Leather, making it so far the only time in history that this song was played as an instrumental.

Home Away From Home
The band Kansas started as a small musical project in the heartland of America. As they grew in popularity they formed a bond with the people of the East coast state of Pennsylvania. During the early years, Kansas played the great north east state as a warm up band for headliners such as The Kinks, Mott the Hoople and Queen. By 1975, Kansas because a headliner themselves and played an impressive concert at the Stanley Theater in downtown Pittsburgh in
December of that year. In October of 1976, they were back to play for their Pittsburgh fans again.
This time, it was at the Syria Mosque; site of a very impressive Genesis concert just six months before. They brought with them a band called Ambrosia from California to warm up the crowd.
Both bands were making their name in the developing genre of Progressive Rock but Kansas, with their unique driving melodies and use of violin was the band everyone was coming to see.
Kansas had just released another impressive album called Leftoverture, the fourth album in just two years. With this productive output and their tireless devotion to touring, Kansas was developing a loyal fan base. The previous album Masque sold 250,000 copies but this new album Leftoverture would push them over the top. Songs like Carry On Wayward Son would help to boost the new album to number 5 on the charts. The Pittsburgh crowd at the Syria Mosque was one of the first to hear this new material. The Leftoverture tour had just started the month before and the band were already masters at performing the new material.
The show presented on these discs consists of three parts. First is the Kansas
concert itself. The band provides a nice mixture of both old and new material for the enjoyment of the crowd. The second piece is an interview of the band members that occurred at the end of the concert. During this interview they discuss the tuxedo worn during the performance by Rick Williams, the masks worn by many of the band members during the show and many other things. The final segment is the Ambrosia performance. As the warm up band, they did play before Kansas but for the purposes of this package putting them at the end of the discs seemed appropriate.
The exact date of this performance is still in question. During the interview a
reference is made to Halloween. As the show likely finished after midnight this would give the date as October 30th. Other sources argue that the masks worn on stage were, in part, motivated by the fact that the concert was occurring on October 31st. Either way, this show is an excellent record of the bands power and proficiency as one of the leading Progressive Rock bands of the

Notes from the Re-Master
This great Kansas show was remastered from a CD copy of the original Pre-FM radio station tapes. The sound quality is excellent with harmonics and music signal up to 18,000 Hz. The clarity and crispness of the sound are also superb, however a number of changes needed to be made to improve the show. First, the noise level was moderate in volume and interfered with the appreciation of the subtle and quieter sections; therefore it was reduced. The tracking was
incomplete and off in some sections so tracking was re-aligned. The tonality also needed adjustment. Mostly, the bass was deficient and needed boosting. In a few sections the frequencies in the 5-8kHz (treble) range were cut to remove a piercing characteristic to the symbol crashes and other high pitched events.
Applause sections were often inconsistent or cut. Some were too loud and others too short. We attempted to obtain some uniformity in the applause sections between songs to enhance the listening experience.
The interview track was obtained from a separate tape source. At its baseline this recording had quite a bit of shrill loud noise that was reduced as much as possible. It is most noticeable between spoken words but, using multiple techniques, now has been minimized.
The Ambrosia tracks were obtained from a third source and were not part of the master radio tapes. The quality is good but not at the outstanding level of the Kansas segments.
Noise was in the high range for this segment so a great deal of time was spent reducing the offending component. Many pops also occurred during this segment that required manual removal even after whole-segment routines were run to remove these noises. Many segments of the Ambrosia tracks were also at low volume and needed adjustment to be comparable to the remainder of the show. This was easily done.

5-5-73, source 1
56,700 Fans Together and Boogie (Rock Calendar), First Day (ARMS), Pigeon Blood (Flagge, 3cd), Quantient (Cobra), & Top of the World (Badgeholders)

(Flagge is a mix, relying on the second source only when the first is cut. It's sound has been amplified considerably, making the music and background noise much louder. It would have easily fit on 2 cds.)
ARMS is the only title to have all of the tracks properly sequenced. It is missing 2 seconds at the cut in the beginning of Song Remains the Same. There is a brief speed problem near the end of Rain Song. It is missing almost 2 minutes of tape after The Ocean. The Ocean and Communication Breakdown run too fast, near 6%. All other tracks run at the proper speed. Cobra is missing a total of about 70 seconds between songs overall but there are no extra cuts because of it. The tape runs at the proper speed. Rock Calendar is highly edited. No Quarter has been completely butchered to remove audience disturbances. They then had to rearrange the song to contend with the edits. Overall, the song is missing 2.5 minutes. The tape problem in the beginning of Song Remains the Same has also been removed which eliminates almost 5 seconds of tape. Whole Lotta Love is missing the first 92 seconds. The Ocean is missing 5 seconds too many. This title runs very fast too. Badgeholders is a two source mix, with source one as it's foundation. It misses a little bit of source one at two of the cuts. ARMS and Cobra sound similar and are a little bit better sounding than Rock Calendar. Badgeholders has been amplified over the others.
