Encore :::
10. Heaven Is In Your Mind

Total Time ::: 1:08:54

::: Slightly distant but clear & enjoyable stereo AUD. Peruse samples for elucidation or ear erudition elicitation.
::: Warts: Some dropouts not entirely fixable & surely missed others.
::: 2nd of 2 Academy nights. JJ Cale opened both nights & Commander Cody only the 14th. Neither opener was recorded by this taper.
::: UPGRADE - Should upgrade circulating copies. From taper's 1st gen safety copy & carefully remastered without EQ.
::: Show was received from taper as 1972-01-04 but the correct date would seem to be 1972-01-14.
::: Thanks to DIMERs bookitty & gv0000 for date correction & extra opening band information.

Recording Information ::: unknown Sony(?) stereo cassette recorder with unknown microphones -> master stereo AUD cassette tape, no noise reduction.

Playback early 1970's by taper (equipment type unknown) ::: master stereo AUD cassette tape, no noise reduction, azimuth adjusted -> 1st generation reel-to-reel tape.
Playback circa 2005 (equipment type unknown) ::: 1st generation reel-to-reel tape, azimuth adjusted -> to DVD audio @48KHz (wavs).

Remastered 2013-01/02 ::: (flac's/de-flac'd) 48KHz wavs of 1st gen tape remastered as follows: NO equalisation! Normalised to remove DC offset. Fixed left channel offset on both sides of tape(s). Adjusted pitch (-.65). Most dropouts & dull spots fixed but surely missed some & a few were only partially repairable. Some volume fluctuations between channels & from taper recording adjustments evened out. Some audience clapalong at beginnings of 2 songs. Tape condition required MANY hours of work in first 3/5ths of recording, but remainder was better (thankfully). There's a bit of high end or volume fluctuation from mike motion and/or tape aging issues, not really a problem, more noticeable on headphones. Boosted total levels (transfer levels somewhat low). Downsampled from 48KHz to 44.1KHz. -> CD Wave (track splits) -> Trader's Little Helper -> yer ears Estimated early show total mastering time 14 hours. First uploaded week of 2013-02-09.

Line-up ::: Steve Winwood - guitar, keyboards, vocals // Jim Capaldi - keyboards, vocals // Chris Wood - wind instruments // Reebop Kwaku Baah - drums, percussion // David Hood - electric bass // Roger G. Hawkins - drums.

Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.

CoolSonics 214 ::: Thanks to the original taper, The Florida Kid! ::: Corrections welcome ::: Here's one for me younger bro', who kept the Winwood/Traffic mentality alive for years in the latter part of the 70s, when many would said it was on the wane. This '72 concert date was in the midst of heavy rotational years of Traffic audio intake for me. Little Queenie was way, WAY addicted to "Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys", so we sparked in many ways & not usually at low mental or aural volume & often in the car in the ol' Queen City of Carlot, as Jorma said a few years later, just "Drivin' Around"! Only 2 months after what is probably my favorite Traffic gig of this vintage, Boston Music Hall, and listening to this, I KNOW what has been missing from my live musical experiences for many the year! They just don't make 'em like this anymore & Winwood can't go back for whatever reason. He may play the tunes, but IT ain't there no more as far as I can hear. Of course, others hear differently & individualised tastes are what it's all about. It ain't a pissin' contest, it's the best copy of this show I could get to after a lot o' work. Let yr hair down & hoist yr glasses high. Enjoy!

Kudos to Zongo for life support, Lochner for mikes&more & Fast Freddie for runnin' Video Dick's Record Emporium with the bathroom office full of tape decks. Thanks to Hanwaker (few among us can keep his pace). Mountains of gratitude to Davmar, D.White, Sanchez, Elliot, The Florida Kid, Kloiber, Zingg, JTW, Bershaw, Boston Gold, Dixon, Moore, Gough & SO many more for all that collecting & sharing... Royal thanks to The Man In The Palace, Doc Tinker, Brinkhoffs, Barely Eatin', Reel Master Gaule, Parrish & all the traders who housed me thru my music acquisition & travel years. Hats off to Brother Kent, Uncle Jake, Little Queenie (& her neighbor Frank) & his honor Ptomaine Thomas. Glasses raised to Byron for musical horizon expansion & much obliged to J & Thurston for keepin' my concert fires burnin' since my continental shift. Thanks to the Mods for keepin' DIME alive. Enjoy, share, give, spread peace. Yers truly, Knees

I was lucky enough to attend the 2nd part of the soundcheck and added this as track 00 in front of the set .
MT & the band were in good mood and it promised to become a great show. And so it took place. This was the best MT show I ever saw. Mick played all songs on his Les Paul. For the encore '' No Expectations'' he switched over to his white strat Sound was perfect as usual in the Blues Garage

Total Time ::: 1:12:02

::: Somewhat distant AUD but with high end still relatively intact & virtually no audience noise. Check samples for yr own personal take it or leave it factors.

::: Warts: Distant, bass heavy at start, bit o' hum, but overall pretty damn steady. More notes below.
::: *Should UPGRADE most circulating copies & is a known gen. Seemingly last on DIME in 2006 as unknown gen but I don't have that one to compare to. If yrs is better, let out a holler.
::: Steve Miller Band played 2 nights with different bands on the bill each night. August 3: Jeff Beck Group/Blue Cheer/Steve Miller Band/Big Mama Thornton & the original Hound Dog Band/Charles Lloyd. August 4, 1968: Butterfield Blues Band/Ike & Tina Turner/Electric Flag/Magic Sam/Steve Miller Band/Kaleidoscope.

Recording Information ::: unknown mono reel-to-reel recorder & microphone -> master mono audience reel tape -> 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B on.

Playback 2011-07-30 ::: 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi BX-300 cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth & pitch adjusted, heads cleaned & demagnatized -> Tascam CD-RW900SL professional CD recorder -> CD-RW, no track splits -> computer -> EAC secure mode (logs made) -> wav file(s) -> Audacity (normalisation to remove DC offset, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch / dropout / bump / pop / click / dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, NO equalisation) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> Trader's Little Helper -> yer ears. First uploaded week of 2013-02-16.

NOTE : Twas HARD not to EQ this but I managed not to do it. Someone with real EQ know-how could presumably do some magic to this like knock out low end hum which is not problematic during the music (you hear it inbetween songs) but I imagine things would be clearer without it. Also a fairly inaudible electric current cyclical noise (heard at slow speeds) might be able to be reduced. Plus the usual EQ wizardry & likely things would improve even more, though it'll always be distant.

1st 7 minutes bass boomy, then settles down except for seconds here & there ("You're So Fine"). Some hum but not audible except between songs. Some distortion in 1st 2&1/2 minutes of "Your Old Lady", then calms down but after 10 minutes on my copy the volume dropped WAY down & had to be manually corrected & the distortion returns somewhat with some volume fluctuation & occasional noise, so I suspect battery power (mike or deck) might have played a part. Original tape flip presumably between trax 8&9.

Yes, there were walk-through metal detectors and more security scrutiny than at most shows, but JEMS hasn't been doing this since 1972 without learning a thing or to about getting gear into a venue.

In truth, getting the recorder in was the easy part. MuisCares is set up as giant dinner with some 3000 people seated at 300+ tables in a convention center room that was as big a football field if not longer. So the trick was how to record from tables of noisy eaters, in a gigantic room where no one is really close or near the PA, with security looking closely for cameras (which were banned, but in truth people did shoot with their phones as the night wore on). The answer, without revealing any trade secrets, was to get the recorder away from the tables and people and as close to the PA as possible, hide it in plain sight, set the levels once and walk away. Happily, our approach yielded a solid result. Samples provided.

You'll hear plenty of close chatter at the start before we moved the recorder. The levels were a bit low, so we had to spend a fair amount of time in post adjusting by song, as some of the acoustic performances (e.g. Mumford & Sons) were 40-50db quieter than the electric ones (e.g. Neil Young). We tried to make all the edits and adjustments as seamless as possible but you may notice some shifts that are more jarring than others. Also note that the program did not run one artist into the next but there were often long breaks in between where video from past years was aired. All this has been removed along with some of the longer breaks where there was no action on stage. The band introductions were either handled by the house announcer (who was awful) or Jon Stewart--either way I have put the track IDs at the start of each song, leaving the intro on the tail end of the track before. I think this will make for better listening when you are trying to play a specific song.

The only frustrating part was that the night ran so long and late that the recorder ran out before Bruce stopped playing (if we hadn't recorded some of the pre-performance portions of the night we would have been OK). The last 30 or so seconds of "Born to Run" have been patched with a crappy phone recording. "Glory Days" is appended from a decent phone recording to complete the show.

Running Time: 57 Minutes

Notes: Quality on this recording is excellent.
This was one of the first shows Van Halen played after being signed to Warner Bros in October 1977. Some people point to this date being the 1st of October but this has never been confirmed. Also, it's worth noting that Van Halen played two sets in Magic Mountain and it's not known if this is the first or second set. 'One More Time' is an unreleased song by Van Halen and this recording is the only example of this song ever being played live. 'Loss Of Control' is the earliest live example of this song being performed from the album 'Women and the Children First'. 'No More Waiting' is also known as 'Get Off My Back' and 'Show No Mercy' and the intro was recylced by Eddie nearly 20 years later for 'Take Me Back (Deja Vu)' for their 'Balance' album. 'Summertime Blues' is the earliest known live version by Van Halen. 'Angel Eyes' is a rare Acoustic Demo by DLR, recorded sometime in 1974. 'Take Your Whiskey Home' and 'In A Simple Rhyme' are demos which have been featured on the bootleg 'Demo Daze' but these come from a much lower generation Tape source. These two songs were also recorded in 1974.

Comment by
Great sound, everything comes through really clear, and there's no extraneous noise/chatter near the taper in the audience, to interfere with the listening experience. I'd definitely feel comfortable rating this show as an A. Their earlier tours (pre-Eclipsed) tend to get glossed over a little, since the material they performed isn't as legendary as their later works, which is a shame because these shows were just as tight and solid as the ones they did for The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and Animals.

(*)Spectral analysis reveals around 10khz of Bandwidth left to the original source. It is not mentioned what the Master source is. Though, 2 analog generations is consistant with what is seen in the spectral analysis and other tests.

Spectral and Frequency analysis also reveals a highly compressed source, proabably around 50:1 Limiting. Though this achieves greater volume, it also adds distortion and harshness to the signal in the mid frequencies. The effects of the limiting were reversed to the extent possible, leaving a cleaner, less harsh recording.

The Bertha Remasters are done for no other reason than to bring greater enjoyment to my own listening experience. I share them freely and with no expectations. If others get enjoyment from them, all the better.

Cassette(audience,TDK D90,unknown gen,from Camden Market seller in 1996) > wav > Soundforge(normalise) > CDWave > split on sector boundaries > flac(6)

Tape flip 15 seconds into Herrman Heiss Er, and also a cut 1 min into My Sensation, both of which I crossfaded to tidy them up.

During Iki Maska she introduces the No Problem Orchestra...
guitar - Steve Schiff
drums - Sty Larsh (?) (In Madrid 1984-04-04 she pronounces it as Sty Lark)
bass - Karl Rucker
keyboard - Mary Stuart(or Stewart?)

Looking at names of available music venues in Toulouse during this time I found several. The most likely is probably "Palais des Sports". Other venues I found were "Complexe Compans Casarelli" & "Le Riff".

During December 1983 she played some dates in France.
I found mentions of 3 of the dates...

1983.12.11 Casino de Paris. Two photos from the show:

1983.12.12 Casino de Paris. Mentioned here:

1983.12.19 Espace Balard, Paris. Photo of ticket:

Even though I don't have an exact date, no live recordings of any French shows from 1983/84 have been officially released so there's no chance of inadvertantly breaking that uploading rule.

Maybe someone has a press clipping or some recollections that may help to pin down the date or venue?

- A few radio station ID's here and there, none were removed, transfer was only slightly equalized.
- There is some tape degradation on "Get On Your Boots" during 2 seconds (that's, kids, why you should always use new tapes to record ...)
- A few seconds were lost in a tape swap at the end of Walk-On, the taper switched taped during a jingle when there was still music afterwards.
- Transfer was done azimuth corrected at 24/96; still the broadcast have some echo and Bono's voice isn't very powerful on the recording.
- Broadcasted live on 94.5 KFM. Recording was done in mono (or broadcasted in false stereo at least).

Tyrannosaurus Rex - 1970-04-04 - Cologne, DE (AUD/FLAC)

(Audience FLAC)

Sporthalle "Progressive Pop Festival '70" (M2-AUD)

01 (6:15) :: ...Elemental Child
02 (7:26) :: Jewel
03 (3:43) :: Organ Blues
04 (8:28) :: Summertime Blues
05 (2:34) :: Hot Rod Mama
06 (3:44) :: Debora
07 (5:26) :: Pavilions Of Sun
08 (2:35) :: One Inch Rock
09 (3:56) :: By The Light Of A Magical Moon// (cuts)

Total Time ::: 44:08

::: EXC on stage stereo miked recording with some hiccups. Check samples for individualised experiential estimations or for what those Merry Pranksters told me they took for daily maintenance doses, "laughers - only 70 mics!" (true story).
::: Warts: 1st 12 seconds mono as only one channel existed. Some volume fluctuations (mostly fixed). Taper turned off deck between songs. Right channel had some issues in some parts - details below. Many dropouts fixed but some were not repairable. You will hear some unfixable problems in "Organ Blues".
::: NOTE : if you want an almost absolutely flawless recording, copy the left channel out for mono 2 channel playback. It is nearly perfect (but you lose the very cool wide stereo effect, so it's not recommended).
::: "Progressive Pop Festival '70", aka "Kölner Festival" April 3rd & 4th, 1970. Poster online if you look.
::: Other acts (according to 2 websites - some of these were no-shows & some unlisted ones probably played) : Procol Harum / Kinks / Chicken Shack / Nice / Colosseum / Deep Purple / Yes / T-Rex / Soft Machine / Eire Apparent / East of Eden / Jeronimo / Livin' Blues / Facts of Life / Ekseption / J.C. Heavy / Mighty Baby / Barclay James Harvest / Circus / Jess & James / Sam Apple Pie / Steamhammer / Novak´s Kapelle / Scratch.
::: This recording hails from Brinkhoffs' collection. If you knew him, remember him while yr rockin'!
::: AUD recordings circulate of some other bands including the excellent East Of Eden set DIMED by Brinkhoffs hisself.
::: Thanks to DIMER badpainter for songlist help.
::: Two weeks after the release of "A Beard Of Stars" album & back when T. Rex was still exploding under the Tyrannosaurus Rex moniker.

Recording Information ::: SOURCE: unknown WDR-FM reel to reel tape recorder (probably a Uher Report) with unknown microphones placed on stage -> master stereo "audience" reel.

Playback 1980 ::: master stereo "audience" reel on Braun TG 60 -> 1st generation 7.5 ips reel on Revox A77.

Playback circa 1988(?) ::: 1st generation 7.5 ips reel on Revox A77 -> 2nd generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B on (unknown cassette recorder).

Playback 2012-12-04 ::: 2nd generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi 680ZX cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth & pitch adjusted for individual recording, heads cleaned & demagnatized -> Sony Linear PCM Recorder PCM-M10 (LPCM 44.10kHz/16bit WAV files) -> computer -> Audacity (normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades &/or glitches, dropout repair, manual one-at-a-time bump-pop-click repair, volume adjustments, NO equalisation) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> Trader's Little Helper -> yer ears. First uploaded week of 2013-02-04.

Mastering notes ::: Overall, the LEFT channel was in VERY good shape. Dropouts & volume fluctuations were basically ALL fixable. The RIGHT channel was fine in many places & completely messed up in a couple of songs, particularly "Organ Blues". Something in the recorder or cables was shorting out - only in that channel. However, after working at a pace of about an hour for every 15 seconds, I was able to repair much of it, to the point there are just some very brief rough spots. There is no cross channel patching possible. As noted above, for audio purists, bothered by even minor, brief imperfections, a mono left channel to both channels for a listening copy will lose the wonderful stereo but offer an extremely clean listen. Your call. More work could be done but after a full week, I'm done in!

Line-up ::: Marc Bolan - acoustic & electric guitars, organ, vocals // Mickey Finn (Michael Norman Finn) - drums, tablas, percussion, Moroccan Clay drums(?), finger cymbals, vocals.

Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.

BRINKHOFF's NOTES (from East Of Eden upload, but directly applicable to this recording):
- when i was studying in aachen in 1980, i used to bump into one of these wild poets / rimbaud / doors / patti smith loveable loonies that would be selling bootleg books and records (hi dirk !!!).
- we got to know each eather better and he mentioned a crazy friend of his who taped tons of stuff in the early 1970s.
- as i expressed SERIOUS interest, he somehow managed to borrow a bag full of small uher reels which he gave to me saying that they would have to be returned within 24 hours.
- it took me a long time to borrow a revox and transfer some of the reels. just wish i'd have had more time ... never managed to copy all of it - what a shame!!!
- been trying to re-borrow the reels for ages, but ...
- the last time i took drugs, i tried to eat an airport. well, ...

CoolSonics 213 ::: Thanks to the original taper & trader! This copy came from DIMER Brinkhoffs, who left this mortal coil some weeks ago. He is sorely missed. I imagine he would be pleased with all the effort I put into restoring this recording, especially the right channel, as it was somewhere DEEP in fucked-up-ville, only recoverable by the wonders of modern computer technology. ::: Corrections welcome ::: My guess is more than a few of you are going to stub your proverbial aural toes upon laying yr eyes & ears on this glistening bunch o' bytes. Brinkhoffs dug this outta the ether long ago & traded it with me & I enjoyed it on many the occasion - most often in the car while driving 25,000 miles a year for work - what else ya gonna do but feed yr ears & stomach. It's easy to see why Brinkhoffs liked this tape. It has shades of Pink Floyd all over some of the songs - check out "Organ Blues" for example, or the Barrett-esque vocals in "Jewel", or. It was not easy getting thru the work on this at times, too many memories.

This recording was a massive revelation for me when it first showed up. I got into Tyrannosaurus Rex at a very early age, circa 1970. As strange as it was, there was some heavy magic in there. Among many other things weird, I bought the Warner/Reprise Loss Leader LPs as they came out & was listening to some demented sounds along with my more "normal" pop & folkrock musical musical mix - like Beefheart / Zappa / Wild Man Fischer / Lord Buckley / The Fugs, etc. When "A Beard Of Stars" hit the cutout bins almost immediately after release in the USA, complete with the bonus 45, how could I resist the cool gatefold cover & the 59 cent price sticker, and the music was wonderfully but acceptably strange. One of our friends even had the Marc "Beard Of Stars" look down pat. Then, over the next couple of years, there was simply the rock star glam vibe that developed, T. Rex fit right into our lifestyles, alongside Bowie, Rundgren, Roxy Music & Mott The Hoople, affecting our way of dressing & sense of cool. I am still rather unapologetic about it. Pics of Marc hung on the wall. "The Slider" came out & we were mind-boggled. He was pretty over the fashion/glam top, but what the hell, song after amazing song with killer sound & guitar. One of the ones I really regret never getting to see live.

This tape arrived at a time before the mega release flood of all things Bolan, and there were few live recordings that seemed to actually give you a feel for what it was really like. This recording WILL give you some serious insight into the breakthru period, from tabla acidfolkfreak to electric guitar mayhem with tinges of pop thrown into the mix. Aside from the many BBC sessions (though lots are still missing), we simply haven't heard many live gigs at all from this era, when you'd think people would have been going for it. Not much around to compare it to, the Lyceum, Brondby Club, Café au Gogo & others are mostly of challenging listenablility & mostly from the earlier Steve Peregrine Took era. There is something around from June 1970, from London I believe, but of somewhat questionable quality as I recall. I think about the closest thing there has been is the "BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert" release from January 1970, but fortunately, while this set is somewhat similar in parts, it also features some different songs & arrangements, with this short-lived Finn duo period having reached some further developed stagelife 3 months on. Not to mention that it is simply not as smooth, slick & tame as the BBC gig, this one gets REALLY far out there - check out "Summertime Blues" with some volume. Even old "Windmill Pete" would feel Marc done it proud & it should leave some people gasping in disbelief - truly out of this world! My feeling is that this recording is in many ways quite unique & special & as about as close as you will ever get to the real exerience. Get out your freak flags, wave them *h*I*g*H* & see what you think. If it ain't already on yr shelf, consider it a gift from Brinkhoffs & CoolSonics to yr ears. Enjoy.
